Description

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Red Heart® Soft Baby Steps®: 1 ball each Elephant A, White B, & Baby Yellow C
  • Crochet Hook: 3.75mm [F-5 US]
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch marker
  • Fiberfill stuffing
  • Small amount of black yarn (for face)

DIRECTIONS:

GAUGE: 10 sc = 2" (5 cm) in pattern; 10 rows = 2" (5 cm). CHECK GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.

Special Stitch
sc2tog = [Insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop] twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

Special Technique
join with sc = Place a slip knot on hook, insert hook in indicated stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through both loops on hook.

NOTES:

All bear pieces except crown are made in continuous rounds (spirals) with right side facing at all times.
It may be helpful to place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round and move it up as each round is completed.

Bear measures 12" (30.5 cm) tall, without crown.

BEAR
Head and Body
Beginning at top of head, with A, ch 6.
Round 1 (right side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 3 ch, 3 sc in last ch; working across opposite side of foundation ch, sc in next 3 ch, 2 sc in last ch””12 sc. Place marker for beginning of round and move marker up as each round is completed.
Round 2: Work 2 sc in first sc, sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next 3 sc, sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in last 2 sc””18 sc.
Round 3: Work 2 sc in first sc, sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next 3 sc, sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in last 2 sc””24 sc.
Round 4: Sc in each sc.
Round 5: [Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times””30 sc.
Round 6: Sc in each sc.

Row 47: Sc in next 6 sc, turn, holding edges of round together, with hook in last st on right side of body, and working through both thicknesses, sc in each st (adding stuffing as needed before working last st), turn””12 sc. Do not fasten off. Remove marker.

First Leg
Round 1 (right side): Ch 1, working in front loops only, sc in next 6 st; leave remaining sts unworked, turn; working in unworked loops of first 6 sts, sc in each loop””12 sc. Place marker for beginning of round and move marker up as each round is completed.
Round 2: [Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times””18 sc.
Rounds 3–10: Sc in each sc.
Round 11: Sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next 6 sc, sc in remaining 8 sc””24 sc.
Rounds 12–16: Sc in each sc.
Round 17: [Sc in next 2 sc, sc2tog] 6 times””18 sc. Stuff leg with fiberfill.
Round 18: [Sc2tog] 9 times””9 sc. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Second Leg
Round 1 (right side): With wrong side of unworked sts of body facing, join A with sc in front loop of first unworked st after first leg, working in front loops only, sc in each remaining st, turn; working in unworked loops of first 6 sts, sc in each loop””12 sc. Place marker for beginning of round and move marker up as each round is completed.
Rounds 2–18: Work same as Rounds 2–18 of first leg.

Arm (make 2)
With A, ch 2.
Round 1 (right side): Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook””6 sc. Place marker for beginning of round and move marker up as each round is completed.
Round 2: Work 2 sc in each sc””12 sc.
Round 3: [Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 3 times””15 sc.
Rounds 4–17: Sc in each sc.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Stuff arm with fiberfill. Flatten last round; holding edges together, sew through both thicknesses to close arm.

Ear (make 2)
Work same as arm through Round 6””15 sc.
Round 7: [Sc in next 3 sc, sc2tog] 3 times””12 sc. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Do not stuff. Flatten last round; holding edges together, sew through both thicknesses to close ear.

Snout
With B, ch 2.
Round 1 (right side): Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook””6 sc. Place marker for beginning of round and move marker up as each round is completed.
Round 2: Work 2 sc in each sc””12 sc.
Round 3: [Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times””18 sc.
Round 4: [Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times””24 sc.
Round 5: Sc in each sc. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Crown
With C, ch 26.
Row 1 (right side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn””25 sc.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc, turn.
Row 3: Ch 6, *slip st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, tr in next ch, skip next 3 sc, slip st in next sc, ch 6; repeat from * 4 times, slip st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, tr in next ch, skip next 3 sc, slip st in last sc. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew first 2 rows together to form circle.

FINISHING:

Stuff snout lightly with fiberfill. Sew snout to front of head, ears to sides of head, and arms to sides of body. Place crown off-center between ears and sew to top of head.
With black yarn and satin stitches, embroider eyes and nose; embroider mouth with straight stitches under nose.
Weave in ends.
