DIY Crayon Chalkboard Signs
It’s back to school season!! Even as a grown-up, who no longer has to go to school every day, I get very excited for all the awesomeness of back to school season. Brand new notebooks, pretty, perfect pencils.
Since I’m well past my own school days, I came up with a craft that is perfect for the teachers at my son’s school. These chalkboard signs have all the elements of back-to-school supplies and here’s the best part – each element is completely handcrafted with supplies from JOANN! Hi, I’m Amber of Damask Love and you’re going to LOVE how these come together.
To make the signs you’ll need:
• Small chalkboard sign
• 3/4” wood dowel (available in-stores)
• Small paper mache cone (available in-stores)
• Wood apple shape (available in-stores)
• Aleene’s Tacky Glue
• Piece of colored yardstick (available in-stores)
• Strip of black yardstick (available in-stores)
• Foam brushes
• Assorted craft paints
Start off by painting the apples with craft paint
Now it’s time to make some “crayons”! Use a craft knife or scissors to cut off the very tip of the paper mache cone
Use Tacky Glue to adhere the paper mache cone tip to the end of the wooden dowel. Once dry, add craft paint to the “crayon”. You don’t need to paint the middle since that will be covered with paper.
Wrap the crayon with a colored yardstick, and then add accents with a black yardstick to bring your crayon to life!
You can personalize your sign with white vinyl (available in-stores) and the Cricut Explore or you can simply use chalk to write in the name of your child’s teacher. Optional: Add a scalloped border around the chalkboard frame using a circle foam pouncers.
Once you’re done, add ribbon to the back of the sign and it’s ready to display on the teacher’s desk or on the door of the classroom.
