Faux Macaroon Photo Holder
April fools day is almost here and what better way to trick someone than by whipping up a batch of faux macaroon photo holders?! Hey everyone, it’s Kara from A Kailo Chic Life, and today I am going to show you how to make these simple macaroon photo holders.
This project uses polymer clay which is super simple to work with and requires very few supplies despite how complicated these little “cookies” look. Lets get started!
I wanted an assortment of macaroon colors just like you would find at a bakery, so I used several different colors of polymer clay. Each small pack of polymer clay will yield approximately 2 macaroon cookies.
Begin by dividing your package of clay into 4 equal pieces and roll them into balls. Pinch off a smaller portion of white clay for the filling.
Slightly flatten your clay balls so that they all end up roughly the same size, about the diameter of a quarter. Layer the clay onto each other as with the white “filling” in the middle. Then use the side of the straight pin or the poking tool of your clay tools to lightly press a line into the side of the two “cookies” about 1/3 of the way up and down from the filling.
Now use the end of the tool or pin to poke, cross hatch, and pull the clay on the lower portion of the cookie (the part next to the filling) so that it resembles the foot of the macaroon. Repeat around the cookies until you have your completed clay macaroon.
Once you have all your cookies made, it is time to make your photo holder. Cut the jewelry wire at varying lengths and use your pliers to bend one end of the wire into a paperclip shape. Then insert the straight end into the clay macaroon.
Place your clay macaroons with metal still in place on a baking sheet and bake for 30 minutes at 275°F. Remove from the oven and let cool before placing your photos in the paper clip.
These little treats will fool everyone! My son kept trying to sneak bites of them even though he saw me making them and knew they were made of clay. They just look that real. Even if they do have a piece of metal sticking out of them!
