Learn How to DIY a Colorful Macrame Necklace

Ok friends! It’s time to channel your inner boho and grab some craft supplies from your local JOANN Stores cause today we are going to DIY a Colorful Macrame Necklace. I remember my mom being obsessed with macrame when I was little kiddo and I love the way this trend has come full circle. So? Who’s ready to get to crafting?

Macrame Necklace

I’m back! It’s Rebecca from Make & Do Studio here today to show you a fun, quick & easy way to macrame a wearable piece of art!

Here is what you are going to need:
Gold Bracelet
Solid Cotton Yarn
Wood Beads
Leather Cording
Variety Colored Beads
Head Pins
Basic Jewelry Tool Set
Rit Dye (optional)

So, I got a little creative with my project…I wanted a small gold hoop to use as the base of the design. When I couldn’t find one, I found this gold bracelet and deconstructed it a tad, to make it work for my project. It was the PERFECT solution! There were already jump rings on the bracelet, but I replaced them with larger ones.

Macrame Necklace

To start, I took three 4ft pieces of yarn and doubled them over and looped them around the hoop.

Then, I started with a basic square knot as pictured below.

Next, I made 2 square knots and the slipped a wood bead on each of the three sections.

Once each of the three sections had a bead, I tied two more square knots on the three sections and attached 2 beads as shown. You can really follow any pattern you like, I just wanted my design to taper off.

The final section of knots consisted of stringing one wood bead in the center, knotting the outside yarns repeating the square knots and finishing off with single woods beads staggered. I thought about dip dying the ends of the yarn, but I decided to add color in a different way.

Now, that the macrame part is complete…it’s time to add COLOR!!!

Using a variety of beads and head pins, I created some beaded dangles to attach to the top portion of the necklace.

Once I created my beaded dangles, I attached them to the top of the necklace with jump rings.

For the actual necklace part, I used aqua color leather cording. I attached the leather cording to the jump rings on the gold hoop so that I could tie it around my neck.
