Heart shaped pizzas are the perfect dinner for both kids and adults to enjoy for Valentine’s Day. As a mom to two kids, it has become rare for my husband and I to get to celebrate Valentine’s Day with a night out, so instead, we opt to celebrate it as a family and these heart shaped pizzas with braided crust are the perfect family activity!
To make these heart shaped pizzas, you will need:
• Small heart pans or heart cookie cutters
• Pizza dough (you can purchase this pre-made from your local pizza restaurant or make your
own with pizza dough packs from the grocery store)
• Wilton red food coloring
• Wilton pink food coloring
• Baking sheet
• Wilton non-stick spray
• Tomato sauce, cheese, and toppings
Begin by mixing your dough according to the package directions. During the kneading stage, divide your dough into three pieces. The large piece will remain plain and the other two smaller pieces will be colored pink and red with the food coloring. Add a tiny amount (a few drops of liquid or 1/8 tsp of gel) of food coloring to the dough and knead to get the desired color. Let the dough rest and rise for an hour in greased pans that are covered with a damp towel.
Remove the dough from the bowls and place a golf ball-sized amount of dough in the small heart pan to form the bottom crust. Next create a long strip of red, pink, and white dough and braid them together. Place this braid around the edge of the heart pan and press into the bottom crust. Add your tomato sauce, cheese, and desired toppings. Bake in a 425F oven for 10-12 minutes until the crust starts to brown.
As an alternative, use a large heart cookie cutter to cut the crust into heart shapes and then add the braided crust around the edge of the heart. Add your tomato sauce, cheese, and toppings. Bake at 400F until the cheese melts and just starts to brown.
Now that you have your pizza, it’s time to serve it! But a plain old plate won’t do… Instead, customize your dinnerware easily with a few glass plates and multi surface acrylic paint. Just paint the underside of a glass plate with your own pretty design. To make the plates washable, you can bake them in a 300F oven for 30 minutes and then let them heat up and cool in the oven. Once cool, your plates can be used and washed as normal.
My kids had such a fun time helping make these pizzas and then eating them afterward.
