SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

FOR FLOWERS:

  • Calico fabrics, 3"x20" for each flower
  • Silk roses on stem, 1 for each calico flower
  • Dark green mottled felt
  • Olive green acrylic paint
  • Needle & thread
  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors
  • Tacky glue
  • Glue gun and glue sticks*
  • *Hot glue gun should only be used with adult supervision.

FOR ROSES:

  • Calico fabrics, 5"x30" for each rose
  • Silk roses on stem, 1 for each calico rose
  • Green floral tape
  • Scissors
  • Needle & thread
  • Ruler
  • Tacky glue
  • Jewelry pliers

DIRECTIONS:

FOR FLOWERS:

  1. Fold fabric in half lengthwise with right sides out.
  2. Sew a running stitch along the long edge, 1/4" from raw edge.
  3. Pull thread to gather the fabric, forming it into a flower by twisting the fabric. Sew gathered ends in place.
  4. Remove flower and calyx, the leafy part that "cups" the flower, from silk rose.
  5. Poke top of bare flower stem through calico flower and secure with a bit of tacky glue.
  6. Using dark green mottled felt, cut out a calyx to "cup" base of calico flower. Attach with tacky glue or hot glue.
  7. To blend color of purchased rose stem to florist tape and green felt, paint these lightly with olive green acrylic paint.

FOR ROSES:

  1. Fold fabric in half lengthwise with right sides out; press.
  2. Sew a running stitch along the long edge, 1/4" from raw edge.
  3. When whole length has been sewn, gather raw edge to measure no more than 10". Tack in place, and cut the thread.
  4. Carefully pull off rosebud and calyx, the leafy part that "cups" the flower. Set calyx aside. Carefully pull leaf stems from main stem. These will be pushed back onto stems when flowers are completed.
  5. Using jewelry pliers, bend top of rose stem over and down to form a loop.
  6. Beginning at right edge of calico "ruffle," roll fabric 2 or 3 times to form a cylinder about the size of a pencil.
  7. Place stem loop next to cylinder shape, about halfway up the flower. Sew to secure, using double thread.
  8. Rotate rose stem to form additional layers of fabric, or "petals." Attach each new layer by stitching into place. Continue until ruffle ends. Fold end under for a neater finish.
  9. Wrap raw edge of rose with 4" of florist tape.
  10. Using scissors, enlarge the center hole of purchased rose calyx to fit around base of calico rose. Glue in place with tacky glue.
  11. Reattach rose leaves.
