SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

KILDARE HOODIE:

  • 3 (4, 4) skeins Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick yarn: Fisherman or color of choice
  • Circular knitting needles size 11 & 13, 29" long
  • Pompom maker
  • Large-eyed blunt needle

SIZE: 6-8 (9-10, 11-12) years.
Finished Chest 32" (34", 35-1/2 "). Finished Length 17" (17-1/2 ", 18-1/2")

GAUGE: 9 sts + 12 rows = 4" in St st (k on RS, p on WS) with larger needle.

GAUGE: 9 sts + 12 rows = 4" in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd) with larger needles.

STITCH EXPLANATIONS

ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, 1 at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts& knit tog. M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting horizontal thread lying between needles & placing onto left needle. Knit new stitch through back loop.

LONGFARD HAT:

M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between needles& placing onto left needle. Knit new stitch through the back loop.

ULSTER MITTEN

M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting horizontal thread lying between needles& placing it onto left needle. Knit new stitch through back loop. ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, 1 at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts & knit them together.

Pattern Stitch:

  1. K1, p1 Rib.
  2. Row 1: *K1, p1; rep from * to end.
  3. Row 2: Knit the k sts& purl the p sts. Rep Row 2 for K1, p1 Rib. Work back & forth on circular needle as if working on straight needles.

Back:

  1. With smaller needle, cast on 36 (38, 40) sts. Working back & forth in rows, work 4 rows in K1, p1 Rib.
  2. Change to larger needle. Work St st (k on RS, p on WS) until 91/2" (91/2 ", 101/2 ") from beg, end WS row.
  3. Shape Raglan Armholes: Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows.
  4. Next (Dec) Row: K1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1.
  5. Next Row: Purl. Rep last 2 rows 9 (10, 10) more times. Bind off remaining 12 (12, 14) sts.

Front:

  1. Cast on and work as for Back until 20 (22, 24) sts rem, end with WS row. Shape Neck.
  2. Next Row: K1, ssk, k6 (7, 8), join 2nd skein. Bind off 2 sts, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 -- 8 (9, 10) sts each side.
  3. Next Row: Purl. Working both sides at same time with separate skeins, continue in St st& raglan armhole shaping as for Back. At the same time, bind off 1 st at each neck edge 3 (3, 4) times. Bind off 2 sts.

Sleeve: Make 2

  1. With smaller needle, cast on 18 sts. Work 4 rows in K1, p1 Rib.
  2. Change to larger needle. Knit 1 row, purl 1 row.
  3. Next (Inc) Row: K1, M1, k to last 2 sts, M1, k1. Continue St st, rep Inc Row every 10th (8th, 6th) row 2 (3, 4) times -- 24 (26, 28) sts total when all inc are complete. Work even until piece measures 91/2" (10", 101/2 ") from beg, end WS row. Shape cap. Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows.
  4. Next (Dec) Row: K1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. St st, rep Dec Row every other row 2 (3, 5) times, then every 4th row 3 (3, 2) times. 8 sts remain when all dec are complete. Work 3 rows in St st. Bind off. Sew raglan armhole seams. Sew side& sleeve seams.

Hood:

  1. From RS with larger needle, pick up & k 32 (36, 38) sts evenly spaced around neck, leaving 4 sts at center front free. Purl 1 row.
  2. Next (Inc) Row (RS): K1 (3, 4), (M1, k6) 5 times, M1, k1 (3, 4) -- 38 (42, 44) sts at row end. Work even St st until hood measures 9"(91/2 ", 10") from beg. Bind off.
  3. Fold Hood in half& sew top seam. From RS with smaller needle, pick up & k 43 (45, 49) sts evenly spaced around front edge. Work 4 rows in K1, p1 Rib. Bind off.
  4. Sew ends of ribbing to center front of neck.

Braid with Pompom:

  1. Cut six 12" yarn strands. Knot tog at 1 end. Divide strands into 3 groups, 2 strands each & braid. Knot remaining end. Sew 1 end to hood at center front neck. Make medium pompom following manufacturer's directions & tie to braid. Trim. Rep for braid on opposite side of front neck. Weave in ends.

LONGFARD HAT:

Hat Earflaps:

  1. Earflaps are worked back & forth in rows on circular needle as if working on straight needles. With circular needle, cast on 3 sts. Rows 1, 3 & 5 (WS): Purl.
  2. Row 2: K1, (M1, k1) twice -- 5 sts at row end.
  3. Row 4: K1, M1, k3, M1, k1 -- 7 sts at row end.
  4. Row 6: K1, M1, k5, M1, k1 -- 9 sts at row end.
  5. Row 7: Purl. Slip sts to a holder. Rep to make second earflap, but do not slip sts to a holder.
  6. Next Row (RS): Knit across sts of second earflap, cast on 9 sts for back, k 9 earflap sts from holder -- 27 sts at end of row. Work 3 rows in St st (k on RS, p on WS).
  7. Next Row (RS): Knit across all sts, cast on 13 sts for front -- 40 sts at end of row. Do not twist sts, join, to beg working in rnd. Place marker for beg of rnd. Work St st worked in rnd (k every rnd) until 5"above earflaps.

Shape Crown:

  1. Change to double-pointed needles when there are too few sts to continue on circular needle.
  2. Rnds 1, 3,&7: Knit.
  3. Rnd 2: (K3, k2tog) around -- 32 sts at end of rnd. Rnd 4: (K2, k2tog) around -- 24 sts.
  4. Rnd 6: (K1, k2tog) around -- 16 sts
  5. Rnd 8: (K2tog) around -- 8 sts Cut yarn, leave long tail. Thread tail through rem sts, gather tog& fasten off.
  6. From RS with crochet hook, join yarn with slip st along edge of hat. Work slip st evenly spaced around edge.
  7. Fasten off.

Braid with Pompom:

  1. Cut three 20" strands of yarn. Hold strands together & fold in half. Use a crochet hook to draw fold through lower edge of earflap to make a loop. Pull ends through loop & tighten. Divide strands into 3 groups of 2 strands each & braid. Knot end. Make a small pompom. Tie pompom to braid. Trim ends. Make a braid on 2nd earflap. Weave in ends.

ULSTER MITTEN: Make 2

Pattern Stitch: K1, p1 Rib (worked in the rnd). Rnd 1: *K1, p1; rep from * around. Rep Rnd 1 for K1, p1 Rib.

  1. With smaller needles, cast on 12 (16) sts. Divide sts onto 3 needles and join, do not to twist sts. Place marker for beg of rnd. Work 6 rnds in K1, p1 Rib. Thumb gusset. Change to larger needles.
  2. Next (Inc) Rnd: K5 (7), M1, k to end of rnd -- 13 (17) sts at end of rnd.
  3. Next Rnd: K5 (7), place marker (pm), k3, pm, k to end of rnd.
  4. Next (Inc) Rnd: K to first marker, slip marker (sm), (k1, M1) twice, k1, sm, k to end of rnd -- 5 sts between markers.
  5. Next Rnd: Knit.
  6. Next (Inc) Rnd: K to first marker, sm, k1, M1, k3, M1, k1, sm, k to end of rnd -- 7 sts between markers.
  7. Next Rnd: Knit.
  8. Next (Inc) Rnd: K to first marker, sm, k1, M1, k5, M1, k1, sm, k to end of rnd -- 9 sts between markers.
  9. Next Rnd: Knit
  10. Next (Inc) Rnd: K to first marker, remove marker, k1, slip next 7 sts to holder for thumb, k1, remove marker, k to end of rnd -- 12 (16) sts rem at end of rnd.

Hand:

  1. Continuing on these 12 (16) sts only, work St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd) until piece measures 5" (5 1/2") from beg.
  2. Next Rnd: K6 (8), pm, k to end. Shape Top. Next (Dec) Rnd: *Ssk, k to 2 sts before marker, k2tog, sm, ssk, k to 2 sts before end of rnd, k2tog -- 8 (12) sts at end of this rnd.
  3. Next Rnd: Knit. Rep last 2 rnds until 4 sts rem. Cut yarn, leave long tail. Thread tail through rem sts, pull tightly tog& fasten off.

Thumb:

  1. Divide sts from holder onto 3 needles. K7 thumb sts from holder, pick up&k 2 sts along edge of hand -- 9 sts.
  2. Join, place marker for beg of rnd. Knit 1 (2, 2) rnd(s). Next (Dec) Rnd: *K1, k2tog; rep from * around -- 6 sts at end of rnd. Next (Dec) Rnd: (K2tog) 3 times -- 3 sts rem. Cut yarn leaving a long tail. Thread tail through rem sts, pull tightly tog& fasten off. Weave in ends.
