SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Red Heart® Baby Hugs™ Medium:
  • 1 ball each Bluie (A) & Dolphin (B)
  • Susan Bates® Knitting Needles: 4.5mm [US 7] & 5.0mm [US 8]
  • Yarn needle
  • Pompom maker

DIRECTIONS:

    • GAUGE:16 sts = 4" [10 cm] and 22 rows = 4" [10 cm] in Garter Stitch.
    • CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needle to obtain the gauge.
    • (4 Medium)  Red Heart® Baby Hugs™ Medium, Art E404 Oeko-Tex Certified 100% Acrylic baby yarn available in 4.5 oz (127 g) 247 yds (225 m)

    • SPECIAL ABBREVIATION
    • K2tog = Knit 2 stitches together. Insert the right needle into two stitches at the same time and knit. This will result in a decrease of one stitch. This decrease will slant to the right.

    • STITCHES
    • Garter Stitch
    • Row 1 (Right Side): Knit to end of row.
    • Row 2 (Wrong Side): Knit to end of row.
    • Rows 3-4: Repeat Rows 1-2.
    • Seed Stitch
    • Row 1 (Right Side): K1, P1, to end of row.
    • Row 2 (Wrong Side): P1, K1, to end of row.
    • Rows 3-4: Repeat Rows 1-2.

    • NOTES
    • Cap is worked back and forth in rows and seamed in back.
    • First and last stitch on every row is worked in Stockinette Stitch-knit on Right Side, purl on Wrong Side, this is the “edge stitch” used for seaming Cap. Directions are for Preemie. Sizes Newborn, 6 months and 12 months) are in parentheses.
    • Head Circumference: 12 (14, 17, 19)" [30 (35, 43, 48) cm]
    • Finished Measurement: 11 (13, 16, 18)" [28 (33, 41, 46) cm]

    • CAP
    • Using smaller size needles and (A), cast on 44 (50, 64, 72) sts.
    • Purl one row on Wrong Side.
    • Rows 1 (Right Side): Work edge stitch, *K1, P1*, to last stitch, work edge stitch.
    • Row 2 (Wrong Side): Work edge stitch, *P1, K1* to last stitch, work edge stitch.
    • Row 3: Repeat Row 1.
    • Row 4: Repeat Row 2 and increase 1 stitch on Newborn and 6 months sizes only—44 (51, 65, 72) sts.
    • Change to larger size needles and begin working in Garter Stitch keeping first and last stitches in edge stitch. Continue until piece measures 3 (3½, 4Âľ, 5½)” [8 (9, 12, 13) cm] from cast on edge, ending with a Wrong Side Row.
    • Begin crown decrease as follows:
    • Row 1 (Right Side): Work edge stitch, *K5, k2tog* to last stitch, work edge stitch—38 (44, 56, 62) sts
    • Row 2 (Wrong Side): Knit across row.
    • Row 3: Work edge stitch, *K4, k2tog* to last stitch, work edge stitch—32 (37, 47, 52) sts
    • Row 4: Knit across row.
    • Row 5: Work edge stitch, *K3, k2tog* to last stitch, work edge stitch—26 (30, 38, 42) sts
    • Row 6: Knit across row.
    • Row 7: Work edge stitch, *K2, k2tog* to last stitch, work edge stitch—20 (23, 29, 32) sts
    • Row 8: Knit across row.
    • Row 9: Work edge stitch, *K1, k2tog* to last stitch, work edge stitch—14 (16, 20, 22) sts
    • Row 10: Work edge stitch, *K2tog* to last stitch, work edge stitch—8 (9, 11, 12) sts.
    • Cut yarn, leaving a 12" [30 cm] tail. Using yarn needle, thread yarn through needle and draw through remaining sts twice, draw up firmly and fasten securely.

    • FINISHING
    • Align back seam edges. Using yarn needle, sew seam together using the “edge stitches,” creating a smooth, flat seam. With (B) and pompom maker, make a 2-1/2" [6 cm] pompom and attach to top of hat. Weave in all ends.
