SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1 skein each Patons Classic Wool yarn:
    • Black(MC)
    • Old Gold (A)
    • Deep Olive (B)
    • Rich Red (C)
    • Russet (D),
    • Forest Green (E)
    • Natural Mix (F)
    • Sage Green (G)
    • Burgundy (H)
  • Size U.S. 6 & 7 Knitting needles (or size to obtain tension)
  • 1/2 yd lining fabric.

GAUGE: 20 sts and 26 rows = 4" with larger needles in stocking st.

DIRECTIONS:

When working from chart, wind small balls of the colors to be used, 1 for each separate area of color. To change colors, twist the 2 colors around each other on WS to avoid a hole.

FRONT & BACK: Make alike.

With MC and larger needles, cast on 72 sts.
Work Chart I in stocking st to end of chart reading knit rows from right to left and purl rows from left to right.
Change to MC, smaller needles & knit 1 row, inc 2 sts evenly across. 74 sts.
Next row: (WS). P2. *K2. P2. Rep from * to end of row.
Next row: K2. *P2. K2. Rep from * to end of row.
Last 2 rows form (K2. P2) ribbing.
Work 1-1/2" (K2. P2) ribbing. Cast off in ribbing.

HANDLES: Make 2.

With 2 strands of MC and smaller needles, cast on 11 sts.
Work 18" in stocking st. Cast off. Fold Handle in half lengthwise and sew sides tog.

FINISHING: Using MC & chain st, embroider KNIT on Front. Sew sides & bottom of Bag. Sew Handles in position.

LINING: Before sewing sides tog, mark WS of lining according to Front & Back measurements with 3/4" seam allowance. Cut out lining pieces. Sew sides & bottom of lining pieces tog using a french seam. Fold & stitch along first row of (K2. P2) ribbing. Press lining to WS along this stitching line.

Twisted Cord: Cut 2 strands of MC 95" long. With all strands tog hold 1 end and with someone holding other end, twist strands to the right until they begin to curl. Fold the 2 ends tog and tie in a knot so they will not unravel.
Strands will now twist themselves tog. Adjust length. Sew down sides and across bottom of bag.
