DIRECTIONS:

To print illustrated instructions for this project, click on the "Download Project PDF" button (above).
  1. Embroider: Using the instructions in the Penguin & Fish embroidery pattern, stitch the animal onto the center of the neutral colored square.
  2. Trim fabric: Trim fabric down to a 7"x7" square with the embroidery in the center of the square. Use a ruler and rotary cutter to cut.
  3. Sew first strip: With right sides together, align a dark colored strip to the right of the embroidered square fabric. The end of the strip should align with the top of the square. Sew strip to embroidered square with a 1/4" seam allowance on the long edge of strip. Only sew to the end of the square.
  4. Trim strip: Flip your fabric open and iron flat. Place a ruler across the bottom of the square and trim off the end of the strip with a rotary cutter. The first strip is complete.
  5. Sew second strip: Repeat step 3, adding a dark colored strip to the bottom of the entire piece. Align the end of the strip to the edge of the first sewn strip. Trim off excess as in step 4.
  6. Sew third strip: Repeat step 3, adding a light colored strip to the left of the entire piece. Align the end of the strip to the edge of the previously sewn strip. Trim off excess as in step 4.
  7. Sew fourth strip: Repeat step 3, adding a light colored strip to the top of the entire piece. Align the end of the strip to the edge of the previously sewn strip. Trim off excess as in step 4.
  8. Continue around: Continue adding strips in a clockwise motion around the fabric square, 2 dark strips then 2 light strips. Add strips until there are three strips on all sides.
  9. Iron: Iron flat. The front of the pillow is complete.
  10. Back: Take the first back piece and fold a third of it over on the right edge with wrong sides together. Iron flat. Repeat with the second back piece, this time folding it on the left edge.
  11. Sew front and back: With right sides together, align the left edges of the first back piece and the front piece. Lay the second back piece on top of both the front and first back piece. Align the right edges of the second back piece and the front piece with right sides together. Sew along the entire outside edge with a 1/4" seam allowance.
  12. Add pillow form: Turn the pillow right side out through the opening in the back. Place the pillow form into the pillow case through the opening.
