SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Red Heart® Super Saver®: 1 skein Soft White A
  • Red Heart® Super Saver®: 1 skein Black B
  • Susan Bates® Crochet Hook: 5mm [US H-8]
  • Yarn needle
  • GAUGE: 14 sts and 15 rows sc = 4" (10 cm). CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.

      DIRECTIONS:

      Coasters Measure 9" (23 cm) x 4" (10 cm)
    • Special Abbreviations:
    • Single crochet 2 together (sc2tog): [Insert hook in next st, yarn over, draw up a loop, yarn over, draw through 2 loops on hook] twice, yarn over, draw through 3 loops on hook.
    • Double crochet 2 together (dc2tog): [Yarn over, insert hook in next dc, yarn over, draw up a loop, yarn over, draw through 2 loops on hook] twice, yarn over, draw through 3 loops on hook.

    • NOTE:To keep the bottom of the Garland from pulling, try making the starting chain with a hook one size larger than the rest of the Garland.
    • GHOST (make 4): Starting at top of head, with A, ch 2.
    • Row 1 (right side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook; turn –1 sc.
    • Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in st, turn – 2 sc.
    • Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first st, 2 sc in next st; turn – 3 sc.
    • Row 4: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in each of last 2 sts; turn – 4 sc.
    • Row 5: Ch 1, sc in each of first 3 sts, 2 sc in last st; turn – 5 sc.
    • Row 6: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in each of last 4 sts; turn – 6 sc.
    • Rows 7–9: Ch 1, sc in each st across; turn.
    • Row 10: Ch 1, sc2tog over first 2 sts, sc in each of next 2 sts, sc2tog over next 2 sts; turn – 4 sc.
    • Row 11: Ch 1, sc in each st across, ch 10; turn – 4 sc and ch-10.
    • Row 12: Dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in each of next 2 ch, hdc in each of next 3 ch, sc in last ch, sc in next 4 sts, ch 10; turn – 12 sts and ch-10.
    • Row 13: Dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in each of next 2 ch, hdc in each of next 3 ch, sc in last ch, sc in next 7 sts, hdc in next st, dc in next st, dc2tog over next 2 sts; turn, leaving turning ch unworked – 18 sts.
    • Row 14: Ch 1, sc2tog over first 2 sts, sc in each of next 11 sts, hdc in next st, dc in next st, dc2tog over next 2 sts; turn, leaving turning ch unworked – 15 sts.
    • Row 15: Ch 1, sc2tog over first 2 sts, sc in each of next 11 sts, sc2tog over last 2 sts; turn – 13 sts.
    • Row 16: Ch 1, sc2tog over first 2 sts, sc in each of next 9 sts, sc2tog over last 2 sts; turn – 11 sts.
    • Rows 17–25: Ch 1, sc in each st across; turn.
    • Row 26: Ch 1, sc2tog over first 2 sts, sc in st across; turn – 10 sts.
    • Row 27: Ch 1, sc in each of next 8 sts, sc2tog over last 2 sts; turn – 9 sts.
    • Row 28: Ch 1, sc2tog over first 2 sts, sc in each of next 6 sts, 2 sc in last st; turn – 9 sts.
    • Row 29: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in each of next 6 sts, sc2tog over last 2 sts; turn – 9 sts.
    • Row 30: Ch 1, sc2tog, 1 sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in last st; turn – 9.
    • Row 31: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in each of next 4 sts, [sc2tog over next 2 sts] twice, do not fasten off or turn – 8 sts.
    • Edging: Ch 1, rotating piece to work across side edge, sc evenly around entire piece, working 3 sc at very top and bottoms points; join with slip st in first sc.

    • FINISHING:
    • With yarn needle and B and using photograph as a guide for placement, embroider 2 French knots for eyes; embroider satin stitches over 2 rows for an oval-shaped mouth. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
