Description

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • TLC Essentials yarn, 1 skein each: Navy (A), Sandstone (B), Persimmon (C)
  • Size H/8 crochet hook or any size to obtain correct gauge
  • 18mm black doll eyes with washers (5/8" buttons may be substituted)
  • Embroidery needle
  • Polyester fiberfill
  • Polyester pellets (optional)
  • Stitch marker or safety pin
  • Tapestry needle
  • Row counter

GAUGE: Rounds 1-4 on head = 2"diameter. GAUGE: 8 sts = 4" in St st.
CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needles to obtain the gauge.

ABBREVIATIONS:

sc2tog (sc 2 sts together) [Insert hook in next st, yarn over and draw up a loop] twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

DIRECTIONS:

Owl body and head are worked tightly in the round without joining. Place marker at beginning of round and move marker up to beginning of next round as work progresses.

It is helpful to keep track of the rounds worked with a pencil and paper or a row counter.

Doll eyes are not recommended for children under the age of 3; embroider the eyes instead.

HEAD:

Starting at top of head with A, ch 2.
Row 1: Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook -- 6 sc.
Row 2: Work 2 sc in each sc around -- 12 sc.
Row 3: *Work 2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc; repeat from * around -- 18 sc.
Row 4: *Work 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc; repeat from * around -- 24 sc.
Row 5: *Work 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc; repeat from * around -- 30 sc.
Row 6: *Work 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc; repeat from * around -- 36 sc.
Row 7:*Work 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 5 sc; repeat from * around -- 42 sc.
Row 8: *Work 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 6 sc; repeat from * around -- 48 sc.
Row 9: Sc in next sc and in each sc around.
Row 10: *Sc2tog, sc in next 6 sc; repeat from * around -- 42 sc.

EYES: Make 2

With C, ch 3. Work 12 dc in 3rd ch from hook -- 12 dc. Join with sl st in first dc. Fasten off, leaving 6" tail.

HEAD AND EYE ASSEMBLY:

Insert 18mm doll eyes into center of each crochet eye. Attach assembled eyes to head, spacing eyes 1" apart; secure with washers on inside of head. Stuff head very firmly. Do not skimp on stuffing! Whipstitch edges of crochet eyes onto head using 6" tails.

BODY:

Starting at top of body with A, ch 18; being careful not to twist ch, join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Row 1: Ch 1; *2 sc in first ch, sc in next 2 chs; repeat from * around -- 24 sc.
Row 2: *Work 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc; repeat from * around -- 30 sc.
Row 3: *Work 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc; repeat from * around -- 36 sc.
Row 4: *Work 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 5 sc; repeat from * around -- 42 sc.
Row 5-13: . Sc in next sc and in each sc around.
Row 14: *Sc2tog, sc in next 5 sc; repeat from * around -- 36 sc.
Row 15: *Sc2tog, sc in next 4 sc; repeat from * around -- 30 sc.
Row 16: *Sc2tog, sc in next 3 sc; repeat from * around -- 24 sc.
Row 17: *Sc2tog, sc in next 2 sc; repeat from * around -- 18 sc.
Row 18: *Sc2tog, sc in next sc; repeat from * around -- 12 sc.
Row 19: *Sc2tog; repeat from * around -- 6 sc. Fasten off, and close hole tightly with tail.

HEAD AND BODY ASSEMBLY:

Add pellets to weight body, if desired, then add fiberfill or stuff body very firmly with only fiberfill. Whipstitch bottom of head to top of body.

WINGS: Make 2

Starting at bottom of wing with C, ch 2.
Row 1: (right side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook -- 1 sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Work 2 sc in first sc -- 2 sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Work 2 sc in first sc, sc in next sc -- 3 sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 4: Work 2 sc in first sc, sc in next sc and in each sc across -- 4 sc. Ch 1, turn.
Rows 5-12: Repeat Row 4 eight times more -- one more sc in each row than in previous row. At end of Row 12 -- 12 sc. Round 1: Ch 1, sc evenly around all 3 edges of wing, increasing at corners as necessary. Join with sl st in first sc. Finish off, leaving a long tail. Whipstitch top edge of wings to sides of body with right side of wings facing.

BEAK:

Starting at bottom of beak with B, ch 2.
Rows 1-5 Work same as Rows 1-5 of wings. At end of Row 5, do not ch 1. Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
Whipstitch beak to head between eyes as shown in photograph.

FEET:

With C and embroidery needle, stitch feet with straight stitches at base of body around Rounds 12 -- 14, following diagram below.

FINISHING:

Weave in all ends.
