SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Caron United (4 oz/113 g; 235 yds/218 m): Orange - 1 skein
  • Knitting needles - size U.S. 8 (5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure
  • Yarn needle

SIZE:

One size to fit average Woman’s head.

GAUGE:

17 sts and 23 rows = 4"/10 cm in stocking stitch.

DIRECTIONS:

Cast on 78 sts.
1st row: (WS). Knit.
Proceed in pat as follows:
1st row: (RS). *K3. P2. Rep from * to last 3 sts. K3.
2nd row: P2. *K2. P3. Rep from * to last st. K1.
3rd row: *P2. K3. Rep from * to last 3 sts. P2. K1.
4th row: *K2. P3. Rep from * to last 3 sts. K2. P1.
5th row: K2. *P2. K3. Rep from * to last st. P1.
6th row: *P3. K2. Rep from * to last 3 sts. P3.
7th row: P1. *K3. P2. Rep from * to last 2 sts. K2.
8th row: P1. *K2. P3. Rep from * to last 2 sts. K2.
9th row: K1. *P2. K3. Rep from * to last 2 sts. P2.
10th row: K1. *P3. K2. Rep from * to last 2 sts. P2.
These 10 rows form Diagonal Pat.

Cont in Diagonal Pat until work from beg measures approx 8” [20.5 cm], ending on a 10th row of pat.

Shape crown: 1st row: (RS). *K1. K2tog. P2. Rep from * to last 3 sts. K1. K2tog. 62 sts.
2nd row: P1. *K2. P2. Rep from * to last st. K1.
3rd row: *P2. K2tog. Rep from * to last 2 sts. P2. 47 sts.
4th row: K1. *P1. K2tog. Rep from * to last st. P1. 32 sts.
5th row: *K2tog. Rep from * end of row. 16 sts. Break yarn, leaving a long end. Draw end tightly through rem sts and fasten securely. Sew center back seam. Weave in all ends.

Pompom: Wind yarn around 4 fingers approx 100 times. Remove from fingers and tie tightly in center. Cut through each side of loops. Trim to a smooth round shape. Sew to top of Hat.
