GAUGE: 13 sts = 6” (15 cm); Rows 1–7 = 5" (12.5 cm).
CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.

Cowl measures 13" wide x 38" circumference (33 x 96.5 cm).

Special Stitch:
Drop st (drop stitch) = Holding knitting needle with yarn hand and point facing hook hand, insert hook in indicated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, ch 1, elongate loop on hook and place on needle.

Cowl is made with two rows of half double crochet alternated with one row of drop stitches.
A drop stitch is a loop made with the aid of a large knitting needle.
The first drop stitch is made by working a ch 1, elongating the loop on the hook and placing it on the needle. The first crochet stitch is then skipped and the next drop stitch made. Each following drop stitch is made by inserting the hook in the next stitch, drawing up a loop, working a ch 1, elongating the loop on the hook and placing it on the needle.
The chain-1 at base of each drop stitch locks the loop in place. Except for the last loop made, loops will not change in size when slid off the knitting needle. To maintain the size of the last loop, hold it at its base as you remove the knitting needle.
Keep tension of loops even on the needle. Take care not to twist loops when placing on the needle or when stitching in each loop.

Row 2 (drop st row): Ch 1, elongate loop on hook and place loop on knitting needle (first drop st made),
