Additional Information

  • Dritz® 5/8" Fold-Over Elastic
  • Dritz® Belle Button
  • Sewing machine
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Ribbon, lace (optional)
  • 2-1/2" x 1 yd fabric for flower (optional)

For the best ruffle, cut lace or ribbon to 2 to 2-1/2 times the length of your elastic/thigh measurement.

Basic Band

1. Cut the elastic to fit thigh without stretching.
2. With the shiny sides together, stitch the cut ends with a 1" seam allowance – be sure to backstitch for extra strength.
3. Fold down each side of the seam allowance, so it is open flat, and zigzag stitch each cut end to the band. Use a .8 to 1.0 stitch length.

Ruffled Lace Band
1. Cut two strips of elastic that loosely fit thigh. The ruffles will account for some extra room, as well as the 1/4" seam allowance.
2. Set the machine to the longest stitch length, and stitch down the center of the lace.
3. Pin the center of the lace to the center of one of the elastic strips.
4. Gently pull the bottom (bobbin) thread to ruffle the lace. Continue to ruffle until the two ends of the lace meet the two ends of elastic. Pin the ruffle to the elastic ends. Pin every inch or so in between.
5. Set the zigzag stitch width to about 5, and stitch the lace and elastic together.
6. Snip the running stitch used to ruffle so the elastic can stretch.
7. Pin the second piece of elastic on the other side of the lace, and repeat step 5. This will create a smooth, pretty surface on the inside.
8. Stitch ends together with a 1/4" seam allowance. Zigzag stitch the elastic and lace edges to finish and prevent unraveling.
9. Add button embellishment.

Ruffled Ribbon Band

1. Cut the elastic to fit thigh without stretching.
2. Follow steps 2 – 6 for the lace ruffling method above.
3. Follow steps 2 – 3 to finish the basic band.
4. Add button embellishment.

Flower Band
1. Follow the basic band instructions above.
2. Tie a knot in one end of the fabric strip.
3. Working in a circular motion, twist the fabric around the center knot. Don’t make a ball! Work in a circle to create a flat lollipop shape. Pin as you go. Use the same 4 to 5 pins for the entire flower by adding each row as you work your way around.
4. Stitch the layers together with a needle and thread. Stitch flower to the band.
5. Add button embellishment.
