1. Cut 2 panels 1" larger than dimensions of journal. Cut another 2 panels the same size from a different fabric to become the front and back sleeves.

2. Craft the pen holder by sewing five 2"x3" panels of fabric together in a row. Turn under the long edges, iron flat, and sew a row of zigzag stitching on each side. Set aside.

3. Decorate one of the front panels with a narrow panel of fabric, 3/4 the way down.

4. Sew two more short panels together to create a pocket. Sew the pen holder to the pocket, allowing room for a pen or two. Baste pocket panels to the front journal panel.

5. Attach the front panel to its matching panel with right sides together, on 3 sides, so it will slide snugly onto the journal front cover. Fold under the raw edges on the fourth side and iron flat.

6. Sew the 2 panels together to cover the back cover of the journal. Fold under the raw edges on the fourth side and iron flat.

7. Cut four lengths of ribbon. On the front cover, stitch the button through the folded edge and ribbon, one at the top and one at the bottom.

8. Stitch ribbons to the back cover in matching positions. Add buttons if desired.

9. Slide on front and back covers. Tie ribbons close to the buttons. Cut the cardboard roll to fit inside the pen holder. Insert pens into holder and small notepad into the front pocket.
