Description

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Lion Brand® knitting supplies:
  • Fishermen's Wool™ Yarn: 1 skein Oatmeal (A), 1 skein Natural (B), 1 skein Nature's Brown (C)
  • Knitting needles, size 10
  • Large-eyed blunt needles
  • 1 button
  • Sewing needle and thread

GAUGE:
16 stitches = 4" in Stockinette stitch (knit on right side, purl on wrong side) before felting. Be sure to check your gauge. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches and rows to make a 4" square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

DIRECTIONS:
STITCH EXPLANATION:
Blanket Stitch:
Secure yarn on inside of work. Working from left to right, carry needle and yarn around from back to front, allow yarn to wrap loosely over edge of work. *Insert needle from front to back approx. 1/2" from previous stitch and from edge of work, catching yarn wrap with needle to form a "corner." Gently tighten stitch; repeat from * along edge.

CLUTCH:
With A, cast on 56 stitches. Beginning with a knit row, work in Stockinette stitch (knit on right side, purl on wrong side) for 2 rows.
Change to B and work in Stockinette stitch for 2 rows.
Change to C and work in Stockinette stitch for 2 rows.
Change to B and work in Stockinette stitch for 2 rows.
Change to A and work in Stockinette stitch for 4 rows.
Repeat last 10 rows until piece measures about 11" from beginning. Bind off.

FINISHING:
Weave in ends.

FELTING:
Wash by machine on a hot wash/cold rinse cycle with detergent and several pieces of clothing to agitate. To felt additionally, dry by machine on a regular setting until almost dry. Remove from dryer and pull into shape.

Fold piece to about 6"x 8", with a 3" flap. At center of flap, cut a slit for the buttonhole. With B, join side seams using Blanket stitch. With B, work Blanket stitch around flap. With sewing needle and thread, sew button opposite buttonhole.

Finished size about 6"x8" after felting
