Felted Knit Purse
SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- 2 skeins Lion Brand Landscapes yarn, Country Sunset
- 1 Ball Moda Dea Cartwheel yarn, Sea Blues
- Knitting needles, size 8 and size 11
- Large-eyed blunt needle
- 1 Pair Jo-Ann Sew Essentials purse handles
- 1" Button
- Embroidery floss (optional)
- 1/4 yd fabric for lining and thread to match
- Basic sewing supplies
BODY OF PURSE:
With size 11 needles and Landscapes yarn, cast on 26 stitches. Knit across row. Repeat for a total of 34 rows.
Row 35: Following established pattern, bind off 8 stitches, knit 10 stitches, bind off remaining stitches. Fasten off yarn.
Picking up yarn, knit across 10 stitches remaining on needle. Repeat for 7 rows. Bind off. Fasten off yarn. Make 2.
Stitch purse together at sides and bottom. (Flap is for the handles) Finish all ends.
With size 8 needle and Cartwheel yarn, cast on 20 stitches.
Knit in stockinette stitch until swatch is approximately 6 inches long.
To felt purse and flower embellishment square:
Place purse and knitted swatch in zippered pillow case or zippered laundry bag.
Wash in washer using HOT water, a dash of detergent, and smallest load size.
Agitate through one cycle; remove piece and check for felting size. If desired, place through another agitation cycle. Check for degree of felting.
If piece has felted sufficiently, place in washer and complete rinse cycle using COLD water.
Remove from washer and allow to air dry. TIP: To aid in shaping purse, place plastic grocery bag over a book or baking pan. Slip covered book inside purse. The wet felted piece can be pulled and manipulated into desired shape. Damp, felted pieces loved to be stretched, pulled, manipulated and handled!
TO PUT HANDLES ON PURSE:
Fold flap around straight edge of D-ring handle.
Hand-stitch in place.
Repeat for the second handle.
FELTED FLOWER EMBELLISHMENT:
From the felted swatch, cut out the flower shape. Because the knit piece is felted, it will not unravel.
Place flower on purse in desired location place button on top and sew it in place with embroidery floss.
TO LINE PURSE:
Lay purse flat and measure width and height. Add 1 inch to each measurement and cut two pieces of lining material that size.
With right sides together and using 1/4"seam allowance, stitch pieces together along bottom & sides of lining.
Turn the purse inside out. Fold the top edge of the lining to inside about 1/2". Stitch in place.
