TIPS:

For Sewing with Faux Leather
* Avoid using pins when cutting out a pattern. Use binder clips, paper clips, hair clips, or weights instead of pins. If pins are absolutely necessary pin only in the seam allowance.
* Mark around the pattern on the back of fabric, cut one layer at a time. Be sure to flip the pattern for right and left side.
* Use a rotary cutter or very sharp scissors when cutting.
* A walking foot, Teflon foot or roller foot is necessary for topstitching.
* Use a chisel-tip leather needle. The size of needle will depend on the thickness of fabric. For thicker fabric use size 14 or higher needle.
* Use a heavier thread for added durability.
* Use a longer length machine stitch.
* Loosen thread tension on top and the bobbin so that seam will not pull.
* Take some pressure off the foot so that the faux leather will not drag when sewing.
* Always test a swatch before beginning a project.
* Topstitching faux leather creates a finished and more authentic look.
* Do not back tack, leave long threads at the beginning and end of seams and tie in a knot. Glue can also be used to secure knot.
* Always press from the back side or use a pressing cloth.
* Test iron settings on scrap to avoid scorching or melting.
* Interfacing can be put in place by using a spray adhesive. Lightly spray on wrong side of faux leather and place interfacing where needed. Always read manufacturer’s instructions before spraying. Test a swatch before beginning.
* After sewing seams, a double-sided tape or rubber cement can be used on the inside seam allowance to hold seam allowances open. Use a roller to press seams down.

For Sewing with Faux Fur
* Mark the grain on the back of the fur with an arrow in the direction the fur lays.
* Trace around pattern on back side of fur rather than pinning.
* Use a new razor blade to cut the backing fabric only, not the fur itself, to keep the mess down.
* Baste by hand before sewing on the machine.
* A walking foot will helps with bulkier fur.
* When sewing on machine, use a longer stitch. This will also allow for hairs stuck in seam to be pulled out.
* Use a heavy pin or seam ripper to work fur out of seam.

For Sewing with Lace
* Lace can be cut and hemmed like any other fabric. It is a delicate fabric. Avoid stretching the lace while sewing. It is best to baste the lace to the under fabric.
* Depending on the lace it can tend to slide during sewing. A spray stabilizer can be used to keep stitches and fabric aligned.
* If the lace has large holes it, the pressure foot can get caught and damage the lace. Wrap duct tape around the “toes” to make a solid foot.
* If the pattern calls for a raw edge hem, serge or use a medium zig-zag on the edge of lace. The medium zig-zag stitch will curl and look small. Using a tight serge or medium zig-zag stitch ensures all of the lace is catching.
* Eliminate the look of darts in lace where needed, by cutting within the different motif patterns. Shape lace into an invisible dart, hand-stitch lace to secure. Trim excess lace.
