Description

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1/4 yard each of nine coordinating fabrics for gifts
  • 1 yard fabric for background
  • 1/3 yard fabric for sashing and inner borders
  • 1/2 yard fabric for outer borders
  • 1/2 yard fabric for binding
  • 51"x52" rectangle of batting (1)
  • 3 yards fabric for backing
  • Fusible webbing for ribbon applique (optional)
  • Basic sewing/quilting supplies
  • Sewing machine

DIRECTIONS:

Note: 1/4" seam allowance used throughout
WOF = width of fabric
Size of Quilt: 43"x44"

Gift #1 (Tall package):
1. Cut two 3"x8-1/2" rectangles for main portion of gift, one 1-1/2"x8-1/2" strip for the ribbon, and two 3" squares of ribbon fabric for the bow. From background fabric, cut four 1-1/2"x8-1/2" strips, one 2-1/2" square and one 3" square.
2. Stitch the long sides together of a background strip, package strip, ribbon strip, package strip and background strip. Press seam allowance toward the darker fabrics.
3. Stitch a 1-1/2"x8-1/2" background strip to the bottom of the pieced unit.
4. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner of the 3" background square. With right sides together, stitch both 3" squares together 1/4" on each side of the drawn line. Cut along the drawn line. Press seam allowance toward the darker fabric. Square up half-square triangle to 2-1/2".
5. Stitch 2-1/2" background square, both half-square triangle units and remaining 2-1/2" background square together using the photo as reference.
6. Stitch remaining 1-1/2"x8-1/2" background strip to the top of the bow unit.
7. Stitch bow unit and gift unit together. Un-finished size of block: 8-1/2"x12-1/2". Make five Gift #1 blocks.
Gift #2 (Squatty package)
1. Cut two 4-1/2" squares for the main portion of the gift. Cut one 2-1/2"x4-1/2" strip and one 5-1/2" square from ribbon fabric. From background fabric, cut one 1-1/2"x12-1/2" strip, two 1-1/2"x4-1/2" strips, two 3-1/2"x4-1/2" strips, one 3-1/2"x12-1/2" and one 5-1/2" square.
2. Stitch main portion of the gift, ribbon and 1-1/2"x4-1/2" background strips together in appropriate order.
3. Stitch the 1-1/2"x12-1/2" background strip to the bottom portion of the pieced gift unit.
4. Make half-square triangles. Trim each to a 3-1/2"x4-1/2" rectangle. Stitch background 3-1/2"x4-1/2" rectangles and bow 3-1/2"x4-1/2" rectangles together.
5. Stitch 3-1/2"x12-1/2" rectangle to top of bow unit.
6. Stitch bow unit and gift unit together. Un-finished size of block is 12-1/2" square. Make three Gift #2 blocks.
Gift #3 (Short package)
1. Cut one 6-1/2" square for gift and two 2"x3" strips for the bow. From the background fabric, cut one 1-1/2"x8-1/2" strip, two 1-1/2"x6-1/2" strips, two 2" squares, two 2" squares and one 4"x8-1/2" rectangle.
2. Applique two 1"x6" strips diagonally across the 6-1/2" square. (Optional: Fuse ribbon pieces to the square. Machine stitch along the long edges. Trim excess ribbon edge along side edges of gift.)
3. Stitch 1-1/2"x6-1/2" background strips and gift square. Press. Stitch 1-1/2"x8-1/2" strip to bottom of gift unit.
4. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on each 2" background square. Place each square matching raw edges along one side of the 2"x3" bow rectangles. Stitch along the drawn line. Trim the excess corner and press. Stitch 2" background squares and bow units together. Press. Stitch remaining 4"x8-1/2" strip to the top of the bow unit.
5. Stitch bow unit to the gift unit. Un-finished size of block is 8-1/2"x12-1/2". Make four.
Quilt Directions:
1. Place three 8-1/2" wide package units and one 12-1/2" package units as desired to make a row. Make three rows. Stitch each row together.
2. From sashing/inner border fabric, cut six 1-1/2" x WOF strips. Measure across the center of each row. (Measurement should be 36-1/2".) Cut four strips to that measurement. Alternating four sashing strips with three package rows, stitch together. Press seam allowance towards sashing.
3. Measure from top to bottom through the center of the pieced unit. Cut two inner border pieces to that measurement. Stitch one to each side of the center unit.
4. Cut five 2-1/2" x WOF strips for the outer borders. Stitch short ends together. Measure across the center of the pieced unit. Cut two strips to that measurement and stitch to the top and bottom. Repeat measuring, cutting and stitching for side borders.
5. Piece backing as needed for a 51"x52" rectangle.
6. Layer quilt top, batting and backing. Quilt as desired. Trim excess off of quilted piece.
7. Cut five 2-1/2" x WOF strips for binding. Stitch short ends together. Press with wrong sides together and long edges even. Stitch to right side of quilt piece. Turn and whipstitch to back.
