Cardigan directions are for size 4 years. Changes for sizes 6 years, and 8 years are in parentheses.
Hat directions are for Child. Changes for size Teen are in parentheses.

DIRECTIONS:

GAUGE:
12 sts = 4" (10 cm); 15 rows = 4" (10 cm) in single crochet. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.

To Fit Chest: 23 (25, 27)" (58.5 (63.5, 68.5) cm)
Finished Chest: 27 (29, 31)" (68.5 (73.5, 78.5) cm)
Finished Length: 15 (16-1/2, 18)" (38 (42, 45.5) cm)

Special Stitch
sc2tog (single crochet 2 stitches together) = [Insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop] twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

NOTES:

1. Cardigan is worked in five pieces: Back, right front, left front, and two sleeves. Each piece is worked back and forth in rows beginning at the lower edge. Front bands and collar are added after five main pieces are completed.
2. Hat is worked in continuous rounds beginning at top of hat. A marker is used to indicate the end of the rounds. Earflaps are worked back and forth in rows across a portion of the stitches in the last round of the hat.

CARDIGAN
Back
With A, ch 46 (49, 52).
Row 1 (right side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across””45 (48, 51) sc.
Rows 2–4: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.
Row 5 (decrease): Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in each st to last 2 sts, sc2tog””43 (46, 49) sc.
Rows 6–9: Repeat Rows 2–5””41 (44, 47) sc.
Rows 10–36 (40, 44): Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.
Fasten off. Note: Piece should measure about 9-1/2 (10-1/2, 11-1/2)" (24 (26.5, 29) cm) from beginning.

Shape Armholes
Row 1 (right side): With right side facing, skip first 3 sts, join A with sc in next st, sc in next 34 (37, 40) sts; leave remaining 3 sts unworked””35 (38, 41) sc.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.
Row 3 (decrease): Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in each st to last 2 sts, sc2tog””33 (36, 39) sc.
Rows 4–19 (21, 23): Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. Note: Armholes should measure about 5 (5½, 6)" (12.5 (14, 15) cm) so far.

Shape First Shoulder
Row 1 (wrong side): Ch 1, turn, sc in first 9 (10, 12) sts; leave remaining sts unworked for back neck and second shoulder””9 (10, 12) sc.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.
Fasten off. Note: Armhole on this side should now measure about 5½ (6, 6½)" (14 (15, 16.5) cm).

Shape Second Shoulder
Row 1 (wrong side): With wrong side facing, skip first 15 (16, 15) unworked sts following Row 1 of first shoulder, join A with sc in next st, sc in each st across””9 (10, 12) sc.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.
Fasten off.

LEFT FRONT
With A, ch 21 (23, 25).
Row 1 (right side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across””20 (22, 24) sc.

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in first 8 (8, 10) sts, [ch 2, skip next 2 sts, sc in next 7 (8, 9) sts] 4 times, ch 2, skip next 2 sts, sc in last st.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc and ch across.
Row 4: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.
Fasten off.

Button Band
Row 1 (wrong side): With wrong side of left front facing, join A with sc in left front edge at lower corner, work 46 (50, 56) more sc evenly spaced across edge to marker (remove marker)””47 (51, 57) sc.

Fasten off.
From wrong side, sew shoulder seams.

Collar
Row 1 (right side): With right side facing, join A with sc in top corner of buttonhole band, work 3 more sc evenly spaced across top of band, work 10 (12, 12) sc across right front neck edge to shoulder seam, 1 sc in shoulder seam, 19 sc evenly spaced across back neck to other shoulder seam, 1 sc in shoulder seam, 10 (12, 12) sc across left front neck edge, 4 sc across top of button band””49 (53, 53) sc.

With B, ch 2.

Place marker in last sc to indicate end of round. Move marker up as each round is completed.

With right side facing, join A with sc in first unworked st of last round of hat, sc in each st to first earflap, sc evenly up side edge of first earflap, ch 31, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 29 ch, sc evenly down other side edge of first earflap, sc in each st to second earflap, sc evenly up side edge of second earflap, ch 31, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 29 ch, sc evenly down other side edge of second earflap, sc in each st around; join with slip st in first sc. Fasten off.
