SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Bernat® Softee® Baby®
    • 6 months: 1 ball Flannel (MC), 1 ball Antique White (A), 1 ball Soft Fern (B)
    • 12 – 24 months: 2 ball Flannel (MC), 1 ball Antique White (A), 1 ball Soft Fern (B)
    • Sizes U.S. 4 and U.S. 6 knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge
    • Stitch holders
    • Stitch markers
    • 2 buttons

      • Finished Size: To fit chest measurement 6 mos - 17", 12 mos - 18", 18 mos - 19", 24 mos - 20"
      • Gauge: 22 sts and 30 rows= 4" with larger needles in stocking st.
      • DIRECTIONS:

      • The instructions are written for smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger sizes the instructions will be written thus []. Numbers for each size are shown in the same color throughout the pattern. To print the patterns, click on the "Download Project PDF" button (above). When only one number is given in black, it applies to all sizes.
      • BACK
      • **Left Back Leg: Beg at cuff, with A and smaller needles, cast on 23 [25-27-27] sts. Knit 7 rows [garter st], noting first row is WS. Break A.
      • With MC, change to larger needles and work 4 rows in stocking st.**

      • Shape inseam: Inc 1 st at end [inseam edge] of next row and following 6th rows until there are 28 [31-33-35] sts. Cont even until Leg from beg measures 7 [8-9-10]", ending on a purl row. Leave sts on a st holder.

      • Right Back Leg: Work from ** to ** as given for Left Back Leg.

      • Shape inseam: Inc 1 st at beg [inseam edge] of next row and following 6th rows until there are 28 [31-33-35] sts. Cont even until Leg from beg measures 7 [8-9-10]", ending on a purl row.

      • Join Legs:
      • Next row: [RS]. K28 [31-33-35) from Right Back Leg. Cast on 2 sts, then K28 [31-33-35] from Left Back Leg st holder. 58 [64-68-72] sts. Place a marker at end of row. ***Work 5 rows even. Dec 1 st each end of next row and following 16th [12th-10th-8th] rows until there are 52 [56-58-64] sts. Cont even until work from marker measures 7? [8-9-10]", ending on a purl row.

      • Shape armholes:
      • Cast off 4 [4-5-5] sts at beg of next 2 rows. 44 [48-48-54] sts.*** Dec 1 st each end of next 4 [4-4-6] rows. 36 [40-40-46] sts. Break MC. Change to smaller needles and with A, knit 6 rows [garter st]. Cast off knitwise [WS].

      • FRONT
      • Right Front Leg Work as for Left Back Leg.
      • Left Front Leg Work as for Right Back Leg.

      • Join Legs:
      • Next row: [RS]. K28 [31-33-35] from Left Front Leg. Cast on 2 sts, then K28 [31-33-35] from Right Front Leg st holder. 58 [64-68-72] sts. Place a marker at end of row.
      • Work from *** to *** as given for Back. 44 [48-48-54] sts. Dec 1 st each end of next 10 [10-10-12] rows. 24 [28-28-30] sts.
      • Cont even in stocking st until armhole measures 2? [3-3-3?]", ending on a purl row. Break MC. Change to smaller needles and with A, knit 6 rows [garter st]. Cast off knitwise [WS].

      • Straps [make 2]
      • With A and smaller needles, cast on 9 [9-11-11] sts.
      • 1st row: [WS]. Knit.
      • 2nd row: K1. *Sl1Pwyb. K1. Rep from * to end of row. Rep last 2 rows for pat until Strap measures 8? [9-10-11]", ending on a RS row.

      • Buttonhole row: [WS]. K3 [3-4-4]. Cast off 3 sts. K3 [3-4-4].
      • Next row: Work in pat, casting on 3 sts over cast off sts. Cont in pat until Strap measures 9? [10-11-12]", ending on a RS row. Cast off knitwise [WS].

      • FINISHING
      • Sew inseams.
      • Sew side seams.

      • Armhole edging:
      • With RS facing, smaller needles and A, pick up and knit 25 [29-33-37] sts along armhole edge of Back and Front. Knit 6 rows [garter st]. Cast off knitwise [WS]. Sew cast on ends of Straps to back edge, noting Straps will cross at back. Sew buttons in position.

      • Acorn Applique
      • With A and smaller needles cast on 2 sts.
      • 1st row: [WS]. Kfb in first st. K1. 3 sts.
      • 2nd and 4th rows: Knit.
      • 3rd row: [Kfb] twice. K1. 5 sts.
      • 5th row: Kfb. Knit to last 2 sts. Kfb. K1.
      • 6th row: Knit. Rep last 2 rows 6 times more. 19 sts. Cont even in garter st until Applique measures 2 1/2" from cast on, ending on a WS row. Break A.
      • Next row: [RS]. With B, K2. [M1. K5] 3 times. M1. K2. 23 sts. Beg on a knit row, work 5 rows in reverse stocking st.
      • Next row: [RS-Make ridge]. *Pick up loop of B 5 rows below and place on left-hand needle beside next st. Knit these 2 sts tog. Rep from * to end of row. 23 sts.
      • Next row: *K1. P1. Rep from * to last st. K1. Rep last row of Seed St Pat twice more.
      • Next row: [RS]. K1. P3tog. Pat to last 4 sts. P3togtbl. K1.
      • Next row: *K1. P1. Rep from * to last st. K1.
      • Rep last 2 rows twice more. 11 sts rem. Keeping cont of pat, cast off 4 sts beg next 2 rows. 3 sts rem.

      • Stem:
      • Work 3 rows stocking st on rem 3 sts. Break yarn and draw end tightly through rem sts. Sew Acorn Applique in position to front as shown in photo.
