SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Fimo clay blocks: mandarin & soft black
  • 2" glass candle votives
  • Conventional or toaster oven
  • Clay blade or craft knife
  • Pasta machine or brayer
  • Acrylic clay roller
  • Flat baking tray
  • Smooth work surface

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Before working with clay, it should be conditioned by kneading until warm and soft. Condition lightest colors first!

PUMPKIN VOTIVE:

  1. Soften and roll out mandarin clay using the pasta machine very thin and long enough to wrap around the votive.
  2. Cut the pumpkin pattern out and use it as a stencil. Place on the rolled-out sheet of clay and cut out the face with the craft knife.
  3. Straighten the edges using a ruler and the craft knife and wrap around the vase. Cut off any overlapping pieces using the craft knife. Press the edges together with thumb. Use a clay roller to smooth the surface until the join is no longer visible. Carefully smooth down any bumps.
  4. Prick air pockets with craft knife and gently smooth down. Harden votives in a preheated oven at 230°F for 30 minutes. Allow to cool completely.

BAT VOTIVE:

  1. Soften and roll out mandarin clay using the pasta machine very thin and long enough to wrap around the votive.
  2. Cut the bat pattern out and use it as a stencil. Place on the rolled-out sheet of clay and cut out bats with the craft knife. Add the bat motif to the prepared glass. Roll out 1/2 block of soft black until very thin. Cut out pattern and use it as a stencil on the rolled-out sheet of clay. Cut out the shape with craft knife.
  3. Using the blade of the craft knife, lift the cutout bat off the work surface and place on the covered glass. Repeat the process, placing several bats around the glass. Roll a few small balls of mandarin for eyes and press on the bat.
  4. Prick air pockets with craft knife and gently smooth down. Harden votives in a preheated oven at 230°F for 30 minutes. Allow to cool completely. Optional: Place bats or pumpkins directly onto the glass and press on firmly.
