ABBREVIATIONS:

WOF = Width of Fabric
LOF = Length of Fabric

DIRECTIONS:

Read directions before beginning; press after each step. All seam allowances are 1/4".

The Hampton Court Fabric Placement Chart uses a unit number to represent each fabric. Each square in the chart is part of a strip of squares. The strips are made from the tubes of squares of fabrics. The tube of squares for each row is cut apart at the seam between the 1st & last squares for the row. The Hampton Court Fabric Placement Chart identifies the fabrics, by number, for each quadrant & for the extra columns and rows.

Look at the top left-most square of the quilt. Count 9 squares over & 8 squares down. Draw a line at the outer edges of these 72 squares. This is the Upper Left Quadrant with 8 strips of 9 squares laid from right to left. Each row of fabric squares begins at Square 9 & ends at Square 1. The fabric for Square 9 will be the same fabric as Square 1 of the prior row.

Refer to the Hampton Court Placement Chart. Compare the Chart to the photo of the quilt. Draw lines to isolate remaining 3 quadrants. Quadrant lines will show 3 center columns & row across middle of quilt.

Each of the 3 Upper Center strips are placed beginning at the 9th square from the top. These 3 strips run up to the top square. The Lower Center strips are placed beginning at the 8th square from the bottom & run down to the bottom square. The 9th square of each of the Lower Center strips is removed and discarded.

CUTTING: Label pieces. Measure the quilt top before cutting border lengths.

ASSEMBLY:

  1. Sew 9 identical strip sets using 1 strip of each of 4 fabrics; Unit 1: Packed Floral Burst, Unit 2: Medallion Floral, Unit 3: Mono Scroll Tan, Unit 4: Buds N Stems.
  2. Create 4 strip panels. For each, sew together 2 Step 1 strip sets & 1 Unit 5: Small Jacobean Mono strip. Sew the strip sets so the strips are in order from right to left; Step 1 strip set; Unit 1: Packed Floral Burst, Unit 2: Medallion Floral, Unit 3: Mono Scroll Tan, Unit 4: Buds N Stems, Unit 5: Small Jacobean Mono & Step 1 strip set; Unit 1: Packed Floral Burst, Unit 2: Medallion Floral, Unit 3: Mono Scroll Tan, Unit 4: Buds N Stems.
  3. Cut the remaining Step 1 strip set & the remaining Unit 5: Small Jacobean Mono strip in half lengthwise so each piece is 22". Sew the 2 Step 1 panels & 1 Unit 5 strip together in the same order as in Step 2.
  4. Press strip panels sewn in Step 2 and Step 3. Alternate pressing 2 seam allowances facing in toward the strip; press the next 2 seam allowances away from the strip to align the fabric for the next steps.
  5. Fold each strip panel from Step 2 in half, right sides right sides together; sew the1st & last fabric unit together with a 1/4" seam allowance to form a tube of 9 strips.
  6. Fold each tube of strips carefully to cut the tubes into smaller segments. From each long tube, rotary cut 9 segments, each 4-1/2" wide. Cut four41/2" segments from the shorter tube.
  7. Strip orientation: The fabric squares will form a large diamond pattern radiating from the center of the quilt. The quilt is arranged in quadrants arranged around center strips. All 4 quadrants are mirror images. Both lower quadrants are reflections of the top 2 quadrants. Each tube from Step 6 will be opened at the seam allowance between the 1st & last square needed for the strip's placement sequence. Each strip in sequence is off:set or stepped by 1 square.
