GAUGE: 16 sc = 4"; 16 rows = 4" using smaller hook. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.

Special Abbreviations:
sc2tog = [draw up a loop in next st] twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

NOTE: Pillow Pal can be used as a pillow unfastened or a stuffed friend with Closure Strap fastened. Pieces are worked separately. Leave long tails at end of each piece to sew pieces together. Pieces are worked in continuous rounds. Pillow Cover is meant to be smaller than pillow.

Pillow Cover fits standard size pillow, 18" across X 14" front to back.

HEAD:
Starting at muzzle with larger hook and B, ch 11.
Round 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in same st, sc in next 8 ch, 4 sc in last ch, turn to work along opposite side of foundation ch, skip first ch, sc in next 8 ch, 2 sc in last ch, place marker for beginning of round - 24 sts.
Round 2: 2 sc in next 2 sts, sc in next 8 sts, 2 sc in next 4 sts, sc in next 8 sts, 2 sc in last 2 sts - 32 sts.
Round 3: [2 sc in next st, sc in next st] twice, sc in next 8 sts, [2 sc in next st, sc in next st] 4 times, sc in next 8 sts, [2 sc in next st, sc in next st] twice - 40 sts.
Round 4: [2 sc in next st, sc in next 7 sts] 4 times, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in last st - 46 sts.

EARS (Make 2):
With smaller hook and A, ch 9, slip st in first st to join, place marker for beginning of round.
Round 1: Sc in each ch around - 9 sc.
Round 2: Sc in each st around.
Round 3: [2 sc in each st] around - 18 sc.
Rounds 4-10: Sc in each st around.
Round 11: [Sc2tog, sc in next st] 6 times - 12 sts.
Round 12: Sc in each st around.
Round 13: [Sc2tog, sc in next st] 4 times - 8 sts.
Round 14: Sc in each st around.
Round 15: [Sc2tog, sc in next st] twice, sc2tog - 5 sts.
Round 16: Sc in next st, [sc2tog] twice - 3 sts.
Fasten off. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through sts and pull to close. Knot to secure.

MANE:
With larger hook and C, ch 26.
Row 1: Working in back nub of foundation ch, sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across - 25 sc.
Round 2: Turn to work in opposite side of foundation ch, [ch 8, slip st in next st] in each ch across, turn to work along sc, [ch 8, slip st in next st] in each sc. If desired, work [ch 8, slip st in next st] down center of foundation ch to add fullness.
Fasten off. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail.

TAIL:
With larger hook and C, ch 13.
Row 1: Working in back nub of foundation ch, sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across - 12 sc.
Round 2: Turn to work in opposite side of foundation ch, [ch 12, slip st in next st] in each ch across, turn to work along sc, [ch 12, slip st in next st] in each sc. If desired, work [ch 12, slip st in next st] down center of foundation ch to add fullness.
Fasten off. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail.

HORN:
With smaller hook and B, ch 12, slip st in first st to join, place marker for beginning of round.
Round 1: Sc in each ch around - 12 sc.
Rounds 2-4: Sc in each st around.
Round 5: [Sc2tog, sc in next 4 sts] twice - 10 sc.
Rounds 6-9: Sc in each st around.
Round 10: [Sc2tog, sc in next 3 sts] twice - 8 sts.
Round 11: [Sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts] twice - 6 sts.
Round 12: [Sc2tog] 3 times.
Fasten off. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through sts and pull to close. Knot to secure.

PILLOW COVER:
With larger hook and A, ch 90.
Round 1: Hdc in 3rd chain from hook and in each ch aross, slip st to first st to join - 88 sts.
Rounds 2-49: Hdc in each st around.
Fasten off. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail.

CLOSING STRAP:
With smaller hook and A, ch 8.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each sc across - 7 sts.
Rows 2-30: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.
Fasten off. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail.

FINISHING:
Using long tails, flatten Ears and sew on either side of Head. Attach buttons or safety eyes on upper portion of Head. Stuff Horn and sew on Head in between Ears. Using black embroidery thread and straight stitches, sew nostrils on Muzzle. Sew Mane from just behind Horn down center of Head.
Sew last round of Pillow Cover closed. Insert pillow and sew opposite end closed. Sew Head in center of one long edge of Pillow Cover. Sew Tail in center of opposite long edge of Pillow Cover.Sew one end of Closing Strap in center of one short side of Pillow Cover. Sew one side of hook and loop fastener to opposite end of Closing Strap. Sew corresponding side of hook and loop fastener to corresponding spot on opposite short side of Pillow Cover. Weave in ends.
