  • Circular knitting needle size 7 (4.5 mm), 16" (40.5 cm) long

    • SIZES:
    • 2 years (4 years, 6 years, 8 years, 10 years)
    • Finished Chest About 28 (30, 32, 34, 36)" (71 (76, 81.5, 86.5, 91.5) cm)
    • Finished Length About 14 (15, 15, 16, 17) in. (35.5 (38, 38, 40.5, 43) cm)
    • To print the patterns, click on the "Download Project PDF" button (above).
    • Note: Pattern is written for smallest size with changes for larger sizes in parentheses. When only one number is given, it applies to all sizes. To follow pattern more easily, circle all numbers pertaining to your size before beginning.
    • Sizing Note: This fun Pullover is an oversized design. This shape not only makes the sweater very comfortable to wear, but allows it to fit a child even as she continues to grow! Check the schematic drawing before beginning. For a closer fit, you may wish to make a smaller size than usual.

    • GAUGE:
    • 20 sts + 26 rows = about 4" (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS).
    • 24 sts + 26 rows = about 4" (10 cm) in K2, p2 Rib pattern.
    • BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.

    • DIRECTIONS:

    • STITCH EXPLANATION
    • kfb (knit in front and back) Knit next st without removing it from left needle, then knit through back of same st – 1 st increased.

    • PATTERN STITCH
    • K2, p2 Rib (worked over a multiple of 4 sts)
    • Row 1 (RS): *K2, p2; rep from * across.
    • Row 2: K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
    • Rep Row 2 for K2, p2 Rib.

    • NOTES
    • Pullover is worked in 4 pieces: Back, Front, and 2 Sleeves.
    • Body of Pullover is designed to have a boxy, slightly oversized fit.
    • All pieces are worked in St st (k on RS, p on WS) with edge sts. The edge sts are the first and last st of every row, and are worked in Garter st (k every row).
    • Side edging is worked on sts picked up along sides of Back and Front.
    • Circular needles are needed to work the side edging and neck. The Back, Front and Sleeves of the Pullover are worked back and forth in rows – we simply used a circular needle, but you can use straight needles for these pieces if you prefer.

    • STRIPE SEQUENCE
    • Work 4 rows with C, 6 rows with A, 4 rows with D, 6 rows with A, 4 rows with E, 6 rows with A, 4 rows with F, 6 rows with A, 4 rows with G, 6 rows with A, 4 rows with H, 6 rows with A, and 4 rows with I, for a total of 64 rows.

    • COLORS of B yarn package
    • Bright Green (C)
    • Aqua Blue (D)
    • Royal Purple (E)
    • Hot Pink (F)
    • Bright Orange (G)
    • Tangerine (H)
    • Yellow (I)

    • BACK
    • With longer circular needle and A, cast on 84 (88, 96, 100, 108) sts.
    • Row 1 (RS): K1 (edge st), work in K2, p2 Rib to last st, k1 (edge st).
    • Keeping first and last st in Garter st (k every row), continue in K2, p2 Rib for 5 more rows.
    • Decrease Row (RS): [K4 (5, 4, 5, 4), k2tog, k3 (5, 3, 5, 3), k2tog] 7 (6, 8, 7, 9) times, k to end of row – you will have 70 (76, 80, 86, 90) sts at the end of this row.
    • Next Row: K1, p to last st, k1.
    • Change to C.
    • Keeping first and last st in Garter st, work in St st (k on RS, p on WS), changing color following Stripe Sequence until all 64 rows of sequence have been completed.
    • Change to A.
    • With A, and keeping first and last st in Garter st, continue in St st until piece measures about 14 (15, 15, 16, 17) in. (35.5 (38, 38, 40.5, 43) cm) from beg.
    • Bind off.

    • FRONT
    • Work same as Back until all 64 rows of Stripe Sequence have been completed.
    • Change to A and continue with A only.
    • With A, and keeping first and last st in Garter st, continue in St st until piece measures about 11 1/2 (12 1/2, 12 1/2, 13 1/2, 141/2) in. (29 (32, 32, 34.5, 37) cm) from beg, end with a WS row as the last row you work.
    • Shape Neck and Shoulders
    • Note: Instructions are for working one shoulder at a time. If you’re confident, you can work both shoulders AT THE SAME TIME – just use a separate ball of yarn for each shoulder.

    • Row 1 (RS): K28 (30, 31, 33, 34) and sl these sts to a holder for left shoulder, bind off center 14 (16, 18, 20, 22) sts for neck, k to end of row – 28 (30, 31, 33, 34) sts rem on needle for right shoulder.
    • Right Shoulder
    • Row 2 (WS): K1, p to last st, k1.
    • Row 3: Bind off 2 sts, k to end of row – 26 (28, 29, 31, 32) sts.
    • Row 4: K1, p to last st, k1.
    • Row 5: K2tog, k to end of row – 25 (27, 28, 30, 31) sts.
    • Rows 6-15: Rep Rows 4 and 5 five times – 20 (22, 23, 25, 26) sts at the end of Row 15.
    • Keeping first and last st in Garter st, continue in St st until piece measures same as Back.
    • Bind off.
    • Left Shoulder
    • Return left shoulder sts to needle and join yarn so that you are ready to work a WS row.
    • Row 2 (WS): Bind off 2 sts, p to last st, k1 – 26 (28, 29, 31, 32) sts.
    • Row 3: Knit.

    • Keeping first and last st in Garter st, continue in St st until left shoulder measures same as right shoulder.
    • Bind off.

    • SLEEVES (make 2)
    • With longer circular needle and A, cast on 38 (42, 42, 46, 50) sts.
    • Row 1 (RS): K1 (edge st), work in K2, p2 Rib to last st, k1 (edge st).
