DIRECTIONS:

  1. Position your leather grain-side down on the mat and adhere it firmly using your hands or a brayer.

  2. Cut:
  3. Follow the prompts in Design Space™ to cut the pieces from the leather.

  4. Assemble:
  5. Assemble tools for leather stitching: soft-faced mallet, acrylic cutting board or self-healing mat, leather stitching punch, and pounce wheel. Binder clips are helpful to hold pieces together while punching stitch holes. Move them around as you punch the edges.
  6. Use a stitching punch and soft-faced mallet to punch holes around the edges of your project. An acrylic cutting board works well, but do no use for food use after craft use.
  7. Line the stitch punch up with a previous hole for even spacing.
  8. Use waxed thread or a thick hand-sewing thread. Button hold strength or higher is recommended. If you want to add an extra decorative stitch across the strap of the wallet, do so now before stitching the strap to the wallet body.
  9. Start with a running stitch. Leave a thread tail at least three inches long at the starting point.
  10. When you reach the last stitch in the line, turn back, going through each hole in the opposite direction to create a solid backstitch line. The thread should end at the same hole where you began.
  11. Do a double stitch to pull the thread to the back of your project, so both thread tails are on the back, with one stitch length between them.
  12. Tie off the tails in a square knot and pull tight.
  13. Work a small dab of super glue into the knot with the tip of a toothpick. Allow to dry. When the knot is mostly dry, it can be pressed flat by firmly dabbing with a spare pencil eraser or old tool handle.
  14. When the knot is glued and dry, trim the ends flush. Take care not to clip your stitches.
  15. For a professional look, work the knot into the space between two stitches then even all the stitches using a pounce wheel in the same size as your leather stitch punch.
