DIRECTIONS:
SPECIAL STITCHES
Ssk = Slip, slip, knit: slip next two sts knitwise to right needle, insert point of left needle through front of sts, knit these sts together through back loop.
 
NOTE
Scarf is worked in 3 columns of mitered squares, each worked from the bottom up. The column of large squares is worked first, then the medium, then the small.
 
Scarf measures 13½ x 77.5" (34.5 x 197 cm).
 
  1. SCARF (LARGE SQUARE 1): With A, cast on 56 sts.
  2. Row 1 (wrong side): K28, place marker for center, k to end.
  3. Row 2: K to 2 sts before marker, k2tog, slip marker, ssk, k to end – 54 sts.
  4. Holding the full needle in your left hand, place a marker in the Garter ridge to denote the right side.
  5. Row 3: Knit.
  6. Repeat Rows 2 and 3 12 more times, then repeat Row 2 only once more – 28 sts.
  7. Place a marker in last st of last row.
  8. Repeat Row 3 once more, then repeat Rows 2 and 3 12 more times, then Row 2 only once more – 2 sts.
  9. Next row (wrong side): K2tog.
  10. Fasten off final st.
  11. LARGE SQUARE 2: With B, cast on 28 sts, place marker for center, then with right side facing pick up and knit 28 sts across top edge of previous Large Square, working from its cast-on edge to final st.
  12. Note: In order for the final st to be identical to the others, insert your needle under 2 strands at the edge (see detail pic).
  13. Row 1: Knit.
  14. Row 2: K to 2 sts before marker, k2tog, slip marker, ssk, knit to end – 54 sts.
  15. Row 3: Knit.
  16. Repeat Rows 2 and 3 12 more times, then repeat Row 2 only once more – 28 sts.
  17. Place a marker in last st of last row.
  18. Repeat Row 3 once more, then repeat Rows 2 and 3 12 more times, then Row 2 only once more – 2 sts.
  19. Next row (wrong side): K2tog.

  21. LARGE SQUARES 3-10: Work same as Square 2 in the following color sequence:

  23. MEDIUM SQUARE 1: With D and right side facing, pick up and knit 14 sts along left side edge of Large Square 1 working from marker to cast-on edge, place marker for center, then cast on 14 more sts – 28 sts.
  24. Row 1: Knit.
  25. Row 2: K to 2 sts before marker, k2tog, slip marker, ssk, knit to end – 26 sts.
  26. Row 3: Knit.
  27. Repeat Rows 2 and 3 5 more times, then repeat Row 2 only once more – 14 sts.
  28. Place a marker in last st of last row.
  29. Repeat Row 3 once more, then repeat Rows 2 and 3 5 more times, then Row 2 only once more – 2 sts.
  30. Next row (wrong side): K2tog.
  31. Fasten off final st.
  32. MEDIUM SQUARE 2: With E and right side facing, pick up and knit 14 sts along left side edge of Large Square 1 working from final st to marker, remove marker from Large Square 1, place marker on needle to mark center, then pick up and knit 14 sts across top edge of previous Medium Square, working from its cast-on edge to final st – 28 sts.
  33. Work same as Medium Square 1.
  34. MEDIUM SQUARE 3: With C and right side facing, pick up and knit 14 sts along left side edge of next Large Square working from marker to cast-on edge, place marker for center, then pick up and knit 14 sts across top edge of previous Medium Square, working from its cast-on edge to final st – 28 sts.
  35. Work same as Medium Square 1.
  36. MEDIUM SQUARE 4: With A and right side facing, pick up and knit 14 sts along left side edge of same Large Square working from final st to marker, remove marker from Large Square, place marker on needle to mark center, then pick up and knit 14 sts across top edge of previous Medium Square, working from its cast-on edge to final st – 28 sts.
  37. Work same as Medium Square 1.
  38. MEDIUM SQUARES 5-20: Work same as Medium Squares 3 and 4 alternately, in the following color sequence:

  40. SMALL SQUARE 1: With B and right side facing, pick up and knit 7 sts along left side edge of Medium Square 1 working from marker to cast-on edge, place marker for center, then cast on 7 more sts – 14 sts.
  41. Row 1: Knit.
  42. Row 2: K to 2 sts before marker, k2tog, slip marker, ssk, k to end – 12 sts.
  43. Row 3: Knit.
  44. Repeat Rows 2 and 3 4 more times, then Row 2 only once more – 2 sts.
  45. Next row (wrong side): K2tog.
  46. Fasten off final st.
  47. SMALL SQUARE 2: With C and right side facing, pick up and knit 7 sts along left side edge of Medium Square 1 working from final st to marker, remove marker from Medium Square 1, place marker on needle to mark center, then pick up and knit 7 sts across top edge of previous Small Square, working from its cast-on edge to final st – 14 sts.
