I bought these items after seeing a friend use one on a project we are doing. It is amazing!! What a time saver, plus, it is much easier on my arthritic hands than scissors.

My husband bought this for me and i've been using it nonstop since then, about two years now. i just recommended it to my Mom, who's interested in beginning to quilt. i never noticed any smell from it at all-- imagine my surprise to read that in reviews! The only thing i would change is to make the mat just a bit bigger-- maybe 24x36" or something. This might be uncool, but i haven't even changed the blade in it yet and it still works well enough. i like the width of the ruler. A way to make it not slide on fabric would be helpful, but then again, if it doesn't slide it's hard to adjust-- so that's a toss-up. All in all, i really love this product and i can't imagine sewing or quilting without it. Hands down, this is my favourite tool.

I've used this set for quilting for at least 5 years and love it! It's what I always hope to find when I'm getting a new quilter started. I finally bought a new cutter when my lock button became iffy, but everything else is still in great condition. I wouldn't want a ruler any skinnier. Of course, I'd like a bigger mat, but this one is perfect for taking with me. I definitely recommend a clear ruler, with the lines being slightly raised on the under side. No lip - it gets in the way.

Yes, the mat stinks something awful, but it does go away after a while (maybe a month or two, don't remember). I left it outside for a while, including in the rain (accidentally). I soaked it in bubble bath overnight. It doesn't smell anymore. The cutter, ruler, and mat are great, I've used them plenty since receiving this last Christmas. The ruler and mat could be a bit bigger for my purposes, but otherwise it's great.

I spent 3 days looking for something the dog dragged in, then discovered that the foul odor emanated from my new mat. I moved it to the basement and now the whole place stinks! The rotary cutter and ruler are great, but buy them separately, especially since the orange-on-grey mat is hard to use anyway.

OK starter set

After less than a year of light to moderate use the skin of the mat is peeling off and the whole mat needs to be replaced. I am not using htis for quilting. I use it for crafts and patterns. I found the mat to be to small for my projects. Love the ruler! The cutter has also been a useful tool. I would not buy this set again for myself, but I would recommend it to someone starting out to use rotary cutting.
