  • Circular knitting needle size 9 (5.5 mm), 36" (91.5 cm) long

About 33" x 51" (84 x 129.5 cm)

GAUGE:
16 sts + 22 rows = 4" (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) using A.
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.

DIRECTIONS:
TECHNIQUE EXPLANATION
Cable Cast On *Insert right needle between first 2 sts on left needle; wrap yarn and pull through (as if knitting a st); transfer new st to left needle. Repeat from * for desired number of sts.

STITCH EXPLANATIONS:
kfb (knit in front and back) Knit next st without removing it from left needle, then k through back of same st – 1 st increased.
M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal strand lying between needles and placing it onto left needle. Knit this new stitch through the back loop – 1 st increased.
skp Slip 1 as if to knit, knit 1, pass slip stitch over knit stitch – 1 st decreased.
sk2p (slip-k2tog-pass slipped st over)
A double decrease worked as follows:
Insert right needle as if to knit, and slip the next st from the left needle to the right needle.
Knit the next 2 sts together.
With tip of left needle, lift the slipped st (the 2nd st on right needle) up and over the k2tog (first st on right needle) and off the needle – decreased 2 sts.

PATTERN STITCHES:
K3, p2 Rib (worked over a multiple of 5 sts + 2 additional sts)
Row 1 (WS): *K2, p3; rep from * to last 2 sts, k2.
Row 2: K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
Rep Row 2 for K3, p2 Rib.

K1, p1 Rib (worked over an odd number of sts)
Row 1 (RS): *K1, p1; rep from * to last st, k1.
Row 2: K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
Rep Row 2 for K1, p1 Rib.

NOTES:
Throw is worked in one piece. The Tree, Star, and Bobbles are worked separately, and then sewn to Throw.
A circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of sts. Work back and forth on the circular needle as if working on straight needles.
Border is worked from sts picked up along edges of Throw.
The Star is worked with 2 strands of C held together. Wind C into 2 separate balls before beginning.
End with a WS row means that the last row you work should be a WS row, and the next row that you are ready to work will be a RS row.
When you see "– 12 sts" in the instructions. This ltells how many sts there will be at the end of that specific row.

THROW:
With circular needle and A, cast on 121 sts.
Work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) until piece measures about 49" (124.5 cm) from beg, end with a WS (purl) row as the last row worked.
Change to B.
Top Edge Border
Next Row: With B, kfb, k to end of row – at the end of this row there will be 122 sts.
Row 1 (WS): Work Row 1 of K3, p2 Rib across.
Row 2: Kfb, work in K3, p2 Rib as established to last st, kfb – 124 sts.
Row 3: Work in K3, p2 Rib as established, working inc sts into rib.
Rows 4-7: Rep Rows 2 and 3 – 128 sts.
Bind off.

Lower Edge Border
From RS, with circular needle and B, pick up and knit 122 sts evenly spaced across lower edge of Throw.
Rep Rows 1-7 of Top Edge Border.
Bind off.

Side Border
From RS, with circular needle and B, pick up and knit 197 sts evenly spaced along one side edge of Throw.
Rep Rows 1-7 of Top Edge Border.
Bind off.
Rep on opposite side edge of Throw.

Tree
With circular needle and B, cast on 11 sts.
Work in K1, p1 rib for 2 1/2 in. (6.5 cm), end with a WS row as the last row worked.
Row 1 (RS): Cable cast on 31 sts, k to end of row.
Row 2: Cable cast on 31 sts, p to end of row – 73 sts.
Rows 3 and 4: Work in St st.
Row 5 (Dec - RS): K1, skp, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 – 71 sts.
Row 6: Purl.
Rows 7-16: Rep Rows 5 and 6 – 61 sts on last row worked.
Row 17: Cable cast on 5 sts, k to end of row.
Row 18: Cable cast on 5 sts, p to end of row – 71 sts.
Rows 19-30: Rep Rows 5 and 6 – 59 sts on last row worked.
Row 31: Cable cast on 3 sts, k to end of row – 62 sts.
Row 32: Cable cast on 3 sts, p to end of row – 65 sts.

Right Bottom Point
With 2 strands of C held together, cast on 2 sts.
Row 1 (RS): Knit.
Row 2: Purl.
Row 3: K1, M1, k to end of row – 3 sts.
Row 4: Purl.
Rows 5-18: Rep Rows 3 and 4 – 10 sts on last row worked.
Cut yarn, but do not bind off.

Left Bottom Point
Cast on 2 sts onto the same needle. Work on these 2 sts only.
Row 1 (RS): Knit.
Row 2: Purl.
Row 3: K1, k to last st, M1, k1– 3 sts.
Row 4: Purl.
Rows 5-14: Rep Rows 3 and 4 – 8 sts on last row worked.

Joining Row (RS): Knit across sts of Left Bottom Point and then sts of Right Bottom Point – 18 sts.
Purl 1 row.

Side Points
Inc Row (RS): K1, M1, k to last st, M1, k1 – 20 sts.
Next Row: Purl.
Rep last 2 rows 6 more times – 32 sts.
Bind off 9 sts at beg of next 2 rows – 14 sts.

Top Point
Row 1 (RS): Knit.
Row 2: Purl.
Dec Row (RS): K1, skp, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 – 12 sts.

Bobbles (make 16)
With B and straight needles, cast on 1 st, leaving a long yarn tail.
K into (front, back, front, back, front) of same st – 5 sts; turn, p5; turn, k5; turn, p5; turn, skp, k1, k2tog; turn, p3; turn, k3tog.
Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail.

FINISHING:
Sew corners of borders.
Place Tree in center of Throw and sew in place.
Using yarn tails, sew a Bobble to each point of Tree.
Sew Star to top of Tree.
Weave in ends.
