Description

12” x 14” Fabric Tote Bag

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 7/8 yd fabric
  • 7/8 yd heavy weight fusible interfacing
  • 1 pkg ½” double fold bias tape
  • Purchased purse handles
  • Basic sewing supplies

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut two 29" x 14" for front, back, and bottom; and two 25" x 5" from fabric for sides.
  2. Cut one 28" x 14" from heavy weight fusible interfacing.
  3. Cut two 30" pieces of bias tape.
  4. With RST, sew both 14" edges creating a tube.
  5. Press seams open and turn RS out.
  6. Mark center of interfacing.
  7. Slip interfacing into fabric tube.
  8. Match seams to center of interfacing.
  9. Follow manufacturer’s directions and fuse fabric to interfacing.
  10. Place purchased purse handles 4" in from each side and sew to edge of tote.
  11. Fold and press up 2" on both sides of center line creating a 4" bottom and 12" sides.
  12. Press side pieces in half WST (12-1/2" x 5").
  13. Cut a 1/2" square out of each bottom corner.
  14. Baste bottom of side piece to bottom of tote.
  15. Baste center of bias tape to bag bottom.
  16. Machine edge stitch bottom only through all thicknesses.
  17. Baste one edge of side piece to edge of tote.
  18. Baste bias tape to side; folding upper edge under.
  19. Machine edge stitch through all thicknesses as far as possible.
  20. Blind stitch any remaining area of bias tape.
  21. Baste the other edge of side to tote.
  22. Baste bias tape to side; folding upper edge under.
  23. Machine edge stitch through all thicknesses as far as possible.
  24. Blind stitch any remaining area of bias tape.
  25. Repeat with other side.

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 7/8 yd fabric
  • 3/8 yd contrast fabric
  • 7/8 yd heavy weight fusible interfacing
  • 1 pkg 1/2" double fold bias tape
  • Purchased purse handles
  • Basic sewing supplies

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut two 29" x 14" for front, back, and bottom; and two 25" x 5" from fabric for sides.
  2. Cut 1 28" x 14" from heavy weight fusible interfacing.
  3. Cut 2 30" pieces of bias tape.
  4. Cut 1 13" x 14" of contrast fabric
  5. With RST, sew one 14" edge; press seam open.
  6. Fold down and press 1/2" on both 14" sides of contrast.
  7. Center contrast over seam; edge stitch to fabric.
  8. With RST, sew remaining 14" edge; creating a tube.
  9. Press seam open and turn RS out.
  10. Mark center of interfacing.
  11. Slip interfacing into fabric tube.
  12. Match seams to center of interfacing.
  13. Follow manufacturer’s directions and fuse fabric to interfacing.
  14. Place purchased purse handles 4" in from each side on top edges and sew to edge of tote.
  15. Fold and press up 2” on both sides of center line creating a 4" bottom and 12" x 14" front and back.
  16. Press side pieces in half WST (12-1/2" x 5").
  17. Cut a 1/2" square out of each bottom corner.
  18. Baste bottom of side piece to bottom of tote.
  19. Baste center of bias tape to bag bottom.
  20. Machine edge stitch bottom only through all thicknesses.
  21. Baste one edge of side piece to edge of tote.
  22. Baste bias tape to side; folding upper edge under.
  23. Machine edge stitch through all thicknesses as far as possible.
  24. Blind stitch any remaining area of bias tape.
  25. Baste the other edge of side to tote.
  26. Baste bias tape to side; folding upper edge under.
  27. Machine edge stitch through all thicknesses as far as possible.
  28. Blind stitch any remaining area of bias tape.
  29. Repeat with other side.
