SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
  • Simplicity 8198 – follow fabric and notion recommendations on pattern envelope.
  • 2/3 yd each of  pink, blue, purple, teal tulle
  • 1/3 yd “oil slick” fabric – for shell treat bag
  • 1/3 yd felt for shell treat bag
  • 1 spool sheer 1” ribbon for ruffles on bag
  • 2 yds  1” satin ribbon for bag handles
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Sewing machine
  • Iron and pressing surface
DIRECTIONS:
Costume:
  1. Follow directions for making Mermaid costume, but omit the bottom tail.
  2. Cut two 8” or 10” x WOF from each of the 4 tulle pieces.
  3. Layer tulle and gather along top.
  4. Pull gathers to fit bottom of costume for tail.
  5. Pin tulle to right side of bottom having gathered stitching ¼” in from edge. (gathered edge will be on outside)
  6. Stitch in place.
  7. Fluff….Trim layers if necessary.
Treat Bag:
  1. Cut 4 shell patterns from felt.
  2. Cut 4 shell patterns from “oil slick”.
  3. Make two shells by layering felt, oil slick facing up, oil slick facing down and felt for each one.
  4. Stitch around ¼” from edge, leaving bottom open for turning.  Clip edges and turn.
  5. Stitch lines of shell as shown on pattern.
  6. Pin the two shells together and stitch close to edge from side marks and bottom leaving top edge open.
  7. For handles cut satin ribbon in half.  Fold each in half and stitch close to long edges.
  8. Pin and sew handles to front and back.
  9. For front ruffles on shell cut 4 sheer ribbon 20” long
  10. Gather in center of each ribbon strip. Pull gathers to fit on shell lines.
  11. Hand stitch gathered ribbon to front.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pretty easy to follow I thought 3-5 hours would be unrealistic, but it went pretty quickly. A couple of pointers. 1. Be sure to use the correct needle in your machine if you use that material they show in the photo. I used a jersey ball needle. 2. Use tear away stabilizer if the material is not feeding through the machine. I changed the bottom by adding the stretchy headband material and adding my tulle that way. The bag I did as a project with my daughter. Fun!!
