Description

Hat & Mittens fit average woman.

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1 skein Caron® One Pound® Yarn for Hat & Mittens: Claret
  • Knitting needles sizes 7 [4.5 mm] & 8 [5 mm,] or size for gauge
  • Stitch holder
  • Yarn needler
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure

GAUGE: Hat: 16 sts & 20 rows = 4" [10 cm] with larger needles in stocking st.
Mittens: 17 sts & 21 rows = 4" [10 cm] with smaller needles in stocking st.

DIRECTIONS:

    • HAT: With smaller needles, cast on 82 sts.
    • **Row 1: (RS). K1. *K2. P2. Rep from * to last st. K1.
    • Row 2: P1. *K2. P2. Rep from * to last st. P1.
    • Rep last 2 rows of (K2. P2) ribbing for 5" [12.5 cm], ending on a 2nd row.**
    • ***Change to larger needles & proceed in stocking st until work from beg measures 8" [20.5 cm; end on a purl row.
    • Shape top: Row 1: (RS). K1. (K2tog. K8) 8 times. K1. 74 sts.
    • Row 2 & alt rows: Purl.
    • Row 3: K1. (K2tog. K7) 8 times. K1. 66 sts.
    • Row 5: K1. (K2tog. K6) 8 times. K1. 58 sts.
    • Cont, dec 8 sts evenly on every following alt row until there are 18 sts. Break yarn; leave a long end. Thread end through rem sts. Draw up & fasten securely. Sew back seam; reverse ribbing seam for turn-back cuff.
    • Pompom: Wind 2 strands of yarn around 4 fingers 50 times. Remove from fingers & tie tightly in center. Cut through each side of loops. Trim a smooth round shape. Sew to top of Hat.
    • MITTENS: Left & right are made alike.
    • **With smaller needles, cast on 30 sts.
    • Work 2" [5 cm] in (K2. P2) ribbing as given for Hat, ending on a 2nd row.
    • Work 6 rows in stocking st.
    • Shape thumb gusset: Row 1: (RS). K14. (Kfb) twice. K to end of row.
    • Row 2 & alt rows: Purl.
    • Row 3: K14. Kfb. K2. Kfb. K to end of row.
    • Row 5: K14. Kfb. K4. Kfb. K to end of row.
    • Row 7: K14. Kfb. K6. Kfb. K to end of row.
    • Row 9: K14. Kfb. K8. Kfb. K to end of row.
    • Row 10: Purl.
    • Row 11: K26. Turn. Slip rem sts on st holder.
    • Thumb: Next row: Cast on 2 sts. P14. Turn.
    • Cont on 14 sts in stocking st for 5 rows. Cast off. Sew Thumb seam.
    • RS facing, join yarn to rem sts on st holder & knit to end of row, picking up 2 sts at base of thumb. 30 sts.
    • Next row: Purl. Cont stocking st for 10 rows.
    • Work 2 rows in (K2. P2) ribbing as given for Hat. Cast off in ribbing. Sew side seam.
