SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

(for six coasters):

  • Cotton quilt fabric:
  • 1/8 yd red; 1/8 yd yellow; 1/4 yd white
  • Navy blue piping (2 pkgs)
  • Batting
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Sewing machine
  • Iron & pressing surface

 

DIRECTIONS:

Note: Each block measures 4-1/2" unfinished.
Use an accurate 1/4" seam allowance.

Cut six 4-1/2" squares, each of white fabric and batting.

  1. From white fabric, cut 2 strips 2-1/2" x 4-1/2".
  2. From blue fabric, cut 2 squares 2-1/2" x 2-1/2".
  3. Sew a blue square diagonally on corner of a white strip.
  4. Trim at 1/4" and press. Lay a blue square on other corner and stitch diagonally to make a point. Trim and press.
  5. Sew the two strips together to make block. Press.

  1. From blue fabric, cut 2 strips 1-1/4" x 4-1/2".
  2. From white fabric, cut 2 strips 1-1/4" x 4-1/2".
  3. From red fabric cut 1 strip 1-3/8" x 4-1/2".
  4. Sew a white strip on each side of red center strip. Press toward dark.
  5. Sew a blue strip on side of white strips to create block. Press.

  1. Cut a 4-1/2" square from red and yellow fabric.
  2. Lay squares on top of each other right sides together.
  3. Mark a diagonal line and sew. Trim seam to 1/4" on one side. Press open.

  1. From white fabric, cut a 2-1/2" square.
  2. From blue fabric, cut 2 strips 1-1/2" x 4-1/2" and 2 strips 1-1/2" x 2-1/2".
  3. Stitch 2-1/2" strips to opposite sides of square. Press.
  4. Stitch a 4-1/2" strip on top and bottom to make block. Press.

  1. From yellow fabric, cut 1 strip 1-1/2" x 4-1/2" and 2 strips 1-1/2" x 2".
  2. From red fabric, cut 4 squares 2" x 2".
  3. Sew a red square on each end of a 1-1/2" x 2" piece to form a strip. Repeat with second strip.
  4. Sew these strips on top and bottom of yellow 1-1/2" x 4-1/2" piece to make a block.

  1. Cut a 6" x 2-1/2" strip of red and one of white fabric.
  2. Sew together lengthwise and press towards red.
  3. Cut 2 strip sets 2-1/2" wide. Flip one so opposite colors meet and sew them together nesting seams to make a block. Press.


Finish each coaster:

 

  1. Lay finished block on top of batting. Sew piping around block using a zipper foot.
  2. Add backing to top of block. Stitch around leaving a 2-1/2" to 3" opening on one side.
  3. Turn right side out and hand stitch opening. Press.
