SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 12"x12" felt, black
  • 12"x9" each: red, green & ivory felt
  • Wool roving, 1 pkg each: ivory, light blue, medium blue, red, green, gold, gray & brown
  • 10/0 seed beads
  • DMCembroidery floss
  • Large felting mat
  • Needle-felting tool and pen
  • Scissors or rotary cutter and mat
  • Pins
  • White marking pencil or chalk
  • Embroidery needle
  • Beading needle
  • Sewing machine
  • Black sewing machine thread

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut four 4-1/2" circles out of black felt.
  2. Cut four 5" circles each from red, green and ivory felt.

SNOWMAN:

  1. Lightly sketch snowman design on right side of black felt with chalk or white pencil.
  2. Lay black felt, right side up, on the felting mat.
  3. Separate a long thin piece of ivory roving by hand, rather than cutting with scissors. To create the snowman outline lay the ivory roving on the black felt and poke the roving into place with the needle-felting pen.
  4. Fill in the snowman's body by separating wider pieces of roving by hand and punching into the felt. Stay within the outline.
  5. Outline the snowman's hat with light blue roving. Poke roving into place; fill in hat.
  6. Add small twig arms to snowman by separating some small strands from the gray roving. Poke into place with the felting pen.
  7. Add a carrot nose of gold roving. Place it on the snowman's face and poke into place with the felting pen.
  8. Make French knots of black floss for eyes and buttons.
  9. Use the sewing machine to free-stitch around snowman, hat & nose with black thread, outlining the shapes.
  10. Sew a few bead clusters around snowman's head for snowflakes.

CHRISTMAS TREE:

  1. Lightly sketch Christmas tree design on right side of black felt with chalk or a white pencil.
  2. Lay the black felt, right side up, on the felting mat.
  3. Separate a long thin piece of dark green roving by hand. To outline the tree design, lay the green roving on the black felt then poke the roving into place with the needle-felting pen.
  4. Fill in the tree by separating wider pieces of roving by hand & punching it into the felt. Stay within the outline.
  5. Lay brown roving for the tree stump. Poke roving into place with the needle-felting tool.
  6. Add small round balls to the tree by separating small strands from the red and blue roving. Poke into place with the felting pen.
  7. Add a star to the top of the tree with small pieces of gold roving. Poke into place using the felting pen.
  8. Free-stitch around tree with black thread to outline the shapes.
  9. Sew a few beads around the tree edge.

HOLLY CANDLE:

  1. Lightly sketch candle and holly design on right side of black felt with chalk or a white pencil.
  2. Lay the black felt, right side up, on the felting mat.
  3. Create outline using roving for the candles and holly. Poke into place with the felting pen.
  4. Fill in by separating wider pieces of roving by hand and punching it into the felt. Stay within the outline.
  5. Lay gold roving for the candle flames. Poke roving into place with the needle-felting tool.
  6. Add small round balls to the holly for berries by separating small strands from the red roving. Poke into place with the felting pen.
  7. Free stitch around candles, holly and flames with black thread to outline the shapes.
  8. Sew a few beads to the holly berries.

SNOWFLAKE:

  1. Lightly sketch snowflake design on right side of black felt with chalk or a white pencil.
  2. Lay the black felt, right side up, on the felting mat.
  3. Outline snowflake with ivory roving. Poke into place with felting pen.
  4. Fill in by separating wider pieces of roving by hand and punching it into the felt. Stay within the outline.
  5. For shading, separate and lay light blue roving on snowflake around edges. Poke roving into place with the needle-felting tool.
  6. Free stitch around snowflake with black thread to outline the shapes.
  7. Sew a few beads to the outside points of the snowflake.

FINISHING THE COASTERS:

  1. Center finished black circles on top of the colored felt circles. Pin in place.
  2. Use embroidery thread and needle to create a running stitch around the edge of the black circle.
