Olfa Gridded Cutting Mat 12" x 18" is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 52.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from OLFA admits there is a problem The OLFA web site says in the FAQ "Due to production and distribution, a new OLFA rotary mat can emit an odorous smell." They recommend wiping the mat with a solution of vinegar and water, letting it rest five minutes, drying and then repeating the process as often as necessary. Why don't they just take care of their "production and distribution" problems? If the mats need airing or vinegar soaks, they should take care of the problem before sending them to us! We too thought at first that a skunk had come near. When my husband's throat began to hurt, he put the mat in our shed. Unfortunately the shed was warm, and that meant the mat warped and is permanently ruined. These mats must never be left in a car or any place that gets warm.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great mat I ordered my mat online (this is the first one I've ever owned) and I absolutely love it. I bought an Olfa rotary cutter as well, and it makes cutting fabric a breeze. I was kind of worried about the smell issue that I'd read from the reviews here, but decided to take a chance. Mine had a very faint chemical smell to it when I first unwrapped the plastic on it, but it was only noticeable getting up close and give it the sniff doesn't bother me, and it seems to have disappeared since having it out in the air of my craft room for a few days. I bought the 18x24 mat and will probably use my next great coupon to buy the bigger one for larger cutting projects.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Yes, it does smell! I bought the large mat for paper crafting because the larger size was perfect! I noticed a smell when I bought it, but figured it would evaporate with time. Well, let me tell you my whole house was stinking to high heaven within a day! Itried every remedy I could think of to remove the smell because I truly did like the mat. NOTHING WORKED, so after about 3 weeks I had to return it to the store. Seems like the odor had been a consistent complaint, so they did not have a problem with me returning it. If anyone knows of a 24x36 mat that does not smell, I'd be happy to give it a try.

Rated 0 out of 5 by from Yes, it stinks! I read the complaints about the mat smelling and thought the reviewers were just a bunch of super-sensitive smellers. I smelled one in the store before buying it and did not notice much of a smell. It just about drove me crazy in the car on the way home and is giving me a headache now that it is home and in my studio. It's a shame because it's a great product, I've worn out two other mats (that incidentally did not stink that I recall) but this one smells so awful I think I'm going to have to return it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Toxic Mat is Unsafe for Home Purchased this mat, own older smaller one and decided to purchase a new larger one to take to classes. I kept the mat for two months trying to wait-out the off-gassing. I even contacted the manufacturer and they claim they have received very few complaints about the smell. They had offered some suggestions to remove the smell, but nothing worked. A friend who is an environmental chemist told me to get rid of it asap, that this is unsafe for my family. Our asthma and respritory symptons were greatly exacerbated while the mat was in our home. I returned the mat and so far, I haven't found one that doesn't stink with the exception of the white pinnable mats. I guess for safety's sake I will cut one of those up into smaller mats.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from very useful on Both sides !! Okay ladies...something to think about...the mat can be used on both sides so it really lasts unlike the grey (which I do own), you can only use the top side or it will ruin your blades. That right there should tell you how long it will last....Yes for a few weeks it does smell but IT DOES GO AWAY!!! I really recommend not leaving your mat in your car cause the heat can warp any cutting mat....and I saw a review that she used soap & warm water..heat can warp the mat and soap can dry it out. I love my mats and will buy again. Like today I'm getting the 12x18 for my sewing table. Best storage is to lay flat, I leave mine on my cutting table or lay it under a bed and wipe with damp cloth to clean when it needs it. Have fun ladies/gents!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love My Olfa Mats! I have had my mat now for 13 yrs. and I love it.I have tried a couple of others because I needed a different color to cut black fabric on. Some of the other kinds of mats are too hard which makes it more difficult to cut on,and possibly slip while cutting. I did leave my 18X24 mat in the car for just a short period of time and it warped.Tried ironing over it with a damp towel which was suggested in a Fons and Porter magazine. It did not work. I will have to buy another one. The smell will go away, but if you are in a hurry spray the mat with fabreeze.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Very stinky! Cutting on this mat is great -- easy to use, self-healing, etc. But I just can't get over the stink. I've seen other reviews on here saying it smells like skunk, but ours smells strongly of chemicals or burning electrical wires. When I first bought it, and left it in the living room, we thought something was on fire, and we started getting headaches and feeling sick. We kept walking around trying to find the burning wires in our house, until we finally realized it was the cutting mat. The mat is now relegated to the garage when not being used.
