Patented ''self-healing'' mats are designed to take the wear and tear that your Olfa rotary cutting blades dish out. Self-healing means the mat will not get cuts, grooves or nicks on it's surface, all of which can make cutting less than perfect.
If you think it "stinks", just return it to the store, get your money back or trade for one that doesn't "stink".
I've had this mat in my office/sewing room for the past several weeks, and this whole time I've thought that a skunk got in under the house and sprayed - wrong! This mat stinks! It's covered in nauseating chemicals that won't wash off! I've washed it three times, the reek is still there. It's currently out in the yard, in limbo. Smelly!!!
I ordered this mat along with a quilting ruler on Monday. It arrived on Wednesday !!!!!!! The mat has no smell as some have complained. We're currently away from home (where my original mat is) so this is a replacement. I loved the first one so this is a duplicate.
I've owned this cutting mat for over 10 years and have had no problems with it. Just remember to keep it flat and out of and away from heat. Highly recommend this over the white hard plastic cutting mats.
I ordered this mat online and it was shipped to me very quickly. As I opened it, I braced myself for the strong odor that several have mentioned this product having. Well, even with my very acute sense of smell, there was absolutely NO odor; that's right, NO BAD ODOR AT ALL. This mat is perfect for cutting longer pieces of fabric without having to move the fabric and take a chance on it not lining up correctly. I love this mat and would highly recommend it to anyone who is considering purchasing it.
I read the reviews but it was hard to believe a company would market a product that smells so bad. It looks like some mats do and some don't, and I drew the wrong straw. fellow skunk board owners, sorry I doubted you. So far, vinegar and baking soda (not together) haven't helped. I had no problem with a smaller mat I bought years ago, but the two I just bought I'll never use if I don't find something to stop the smell.
I have owned smaller cutting mats from japan for 20-30 years ago and they still work great. This mat is very similar to those, and work very well. I love the large size, and it's not too heavy. It is slightly bendy so I would recommend placing it on a solid surface. Overall, worth getting the larger size if cutting fabric.
I have had a few of these mats in my sewing life and will always get another! The color contrast is easy to see, the size is perfect for me too!
