  • Lion Brand® stitch markers
  • Lion Brand® large-eyed blunt needle
  • Tape measure

  • Circular knitting needle size 8 (5 mm), 29 in. (73.5 cm) long

GAUGE

13 sts + 25 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm) in Open Work pattern.

STITCH EXPLANATION

Yo (yarn over)

An increase that also creates a small decorative hole (eyelet) in the fabric, worked as follows:

1. Bring yarn to front, between the needles.

2. Take yarn to back, over the right hand needle. This creates the new st. You are now ready to proceed with the next st as instructed.

PATTERN STITCH

Open Work pattern (worked over an even number of sts)

Row 1 (RS): *Yo, k2tog; rep from * across.

Rows 2 and 4: Knit.

Row 3: *K2tog, yo; rep from * across.

Rep Rows 1-4 for Open Work pattern.

NOTES

  1. Poncho is worked in 2 pieces, Front and Back.  
  2. A circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of sts. Work back and forth on the circular needle as if working on straight needles.
  3. When you see 'as established' in the instructions, this means to continue in the current pattern st, lining up sts as in previous rows.

DIRECTIONS:

BACK

Cast on 104 sts.

Knit 2 rows.

Row 1 (RS): K8, work Row 1 of Open Work pattern to last 8 sts, k8.

Row 2: K8, work next row of Open Work pattern to last 8 sts, k8.

Rep Row 2, keeping first and last 8 sts in Garter st (k every row) and remaining sts in Open Work pattern until piece measures about 17 in. (43 cm) from beg, end with a Row 2 or 4 of Open Work pattern as the last row you work.

Shape Neck and Shoulders

Next Row (RS): K8, work in Open Work pattern as established over 28 sts, place marker (pm), k32 for neck, pm, work in Open Work pattern as established to last 8 sts, k8.

Next Row: K8, work in Open Work pattern to marker, slip marker (sm), k to next marker, sm, work in Open Work pattern as established to last 8 sts, k8.

Rep last row twice more.

Next Row: K8, work in Open Work pattern as established to marker, remove marker, k4, join a 2nd ball of yarn and bind off next 24 sts for neck, k to next marker, remove marker, work in Open Work pattern as established to last 8 sts,

k8.

You will now be working both sides AT THE SAME TIME, with separate balls of yarn.

Next Row: On first side, k8, work in Open Work pattern as established to last 4 sts, k4; on second side, with separate ball of yarn, k4, work in Open Work pattern as established to last 8 sts, k8.

Rep last row until piece measures about 19 in. (48.5 cm) from beg, end with a Row 2 or 4 of Open Work pattern as the last row you work.

Bind off.

FRONT

Cast on and work same as Back until piece measures about 16 1/2 in. (42 cm) from beg (about 1/2 in. (1.5 cm) less than Back to Shape Neck and Shoulders) end with a Row 2 or 4 of Open Work pattern as the last row you work.

Next Row (RS): K8, work in Open Work pattern as established over 28 sts, pm, k32 for neck, pm, work in Open Work pattern as established to last 8 sts, k8.

Next Row: K8, work in Open Work pattern to marker, sm, k to next marker, sm, work in Open Work pattern to last 8 sts, k8.

Rep last row twice more.

Next Row: K8, work in Open Work pattern as established to marker, remove marker, k4, join a 2nd ball of yarn and bind off next 24 sts for neck, k to next marker, remove marker, work in Open Work pattern as established to last 8 sts, k8.
