Cutting Chart: one lap quilt
WOF = width of fabric
Use 1/4" seam allowance unless otherwise noted.
Cut two 6-1?2" wide strips from the white solid fabric. Cut two 6-1?2" wide strips each from other 7 solids. Press each strip to remove all folds & wrinkles.
Begin at left end of one strip. Place Fons & Porter® Pyramid Ruler atop strip, align bottom of ruler with bottom fabric edge & top of ruler with top fabric edge. Trim along left slanted edge of ruler. (A)
Cut along right slanted edge of ruler to make one pyramid triangle. (B) To cut second pyramid triangle, rotate ruler so bottom edge of ruler is aligned with top edge of fabric & angled side of ruler is aligned with slanted edge of strip. Cut along other slanted edge of ruler. (C) Continue cutting until end of strip. Repeat for remaining strips, keep triangles in piles by color. There should be twice as many white triangles.
Lay out rows of 15 triangles alternating directions of pyramids & mixing colors. Use 3 white triangles in each row. Lay out a total of 7 rows. (D)
Sew first two triangles together with flat tips on opposite ends. Continue adding triangles to one end, alternating direction of flat & tip points, to total 15 triangles. Press seams of odd-numbered rows to the right &
even-numbered rows to the left. Repeat for remaining rows to total 7 rows.
Sew rows together with seams pressed in opposite directionsto align seams & eliminate bulk. Once all 7 rows are sewn together, press row seams in one direction.
Using a long ruler & rotary cutter, trim the right & left sides of the quilt to straighten side. Outermost triangles will be cut in half vertically to square the sides.
Cut the backing fabric into two 58" x width of fabric pieces. Trim selvage from one side of each piece & sew those sides together. Press seam flat.
Place backing fabric right side down onto a flat surface. Cut a piece of batting the size of backing fabric & place on top of backing. Lay quilt top, face up, on top of batting. Use safety pins to baste layers together, starting in center & working outward. Quilt using preferred design & method.
The simple design of this quilt would look great with just straight stitching 1/4" from seam lines. (photo E)
Once quilting is completed, trim backing & batting even with quilt top, squaring up the sides.
BINDING: Remove all selvage edges & sew strips together in a continuous strip. Press seams open. Fold strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together; press along fold. Pin binding strip along one side of quilt on front, raw edges even. Sew binding strip to other end with 1/4" seam allowance.
Cut binding strip even with edge. Pin binding strip to opposite side of quilt; repeat sewing to end of that side. Cut binding strip even with edge. Fold bindings over to back of quilt; pin in place. Hand sew binding to quilt using a blind stitch.
For the other two sides, take binding strip & open fold on one end. Turn down 1/2"; fold back in half for a nice finished edge. Pin binding strip to one side, raw edges even; stitch with 1/4" seam allowance; stop several inches from other end. Cut binding strip leaving a 1" to 2" tail. Open fold on tail; turn down so edge is even with edge of quilt; fold back in half. Stitch to end. Repeat for the remaining side. Fold bindings over to back of quilt; pin in place. Blind stitch binding to quilt.
