Description

FLANGED PILLOW

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Quilting fabrics:
  • 1-1/8 yd Sundrenched Butterfly/Flowers Lavender
    1 yd Illusions Floral Turquoise
  • 24"x24" Quilt batting
  • 24"x24" Muslin
  • 18" Square pillow insert
  • Basic sewing & quilting supplies

DIRECTIONS:

For stitching, each section of instructions are put within a P tag. Lines are single spaced. Titles are italicized but NOT bolded.

CUTTING:
Sundrenched Butterfly/Flowers Lavender: one 18-1/2"x18-1/2" square for front, one 18"x18-1/2" rectangle and one 10"x18-1/2" rectangle for back.
Illusions Floral Turquoise: eight 24-3/4"x3-1/2" flange pieces.

ASSEMBLY:
1. Trim ends of flange pieces diagonally.

2. Turn under 1" then 1" again on one 18-1/2" side edge of the pillow back pieces.

3. Overlap the hemmed edge of the larger back over the hemmed edge of smaller piece so back is 18-1/2" wide. Baste pieces together 1/4" from top and bottom edges.

4. Right sides together, using 1/4" seam allowance, stitch shorter edge of flange piece to each edge of front and back, beginning and ending stitching 1/4" from edge.

5. Fold center diagonally, right sides together and stitch adjacent diagonal ends of flange using 1/4" seam allowance. Fold other diagonal to sew remaining flanges at two corners.

6. Place quilt batting on top of the backing fabric. Center the pillow top on the batting right side up and pin the layers together.

7. Quilt along seamline between flange and pillow center. Quilt as desired.

8. Place front and back right sides together, stitch 1/2" from outer edge. Clip corners and turn right side out.

9. Stitch along seamline between pillow and flange. Insert pillow insert.

PIECED FLANGED PILLOW

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 3/4 yd Floral Cats Pink
  • 1/8 yd each: Cat Floral Candy, Sundrenched Butterfly/Flowers Lavender, Multi Bright Stripe, Illusions Floral Turquoise, Etchings Butterflies Pink, Green Stripe, Taylor Patterned Butterfly Multi, Taylor Packed Butterfly Multi, Taylor Patch Multi and Yellow Small All-Over Print
  • 20"x16" Backing fabric or muslin
  • 20"x16" Quilt batting
  • 12"x16" Pillow insert
  • Basic sewing & quilting supplies

CUTTING:
Floral Cats Pink: one 16"x18" rectangle and one 10"x16" rectangle for pillow back, two 16-3/4"x2-1/4" strips and two 20-3/4"x2-1/4" strips for flange pieces. Note: Trim ends of flange strips diagonally.
Remaining fabrics: two 8-1/2"x3" rectangles, one 4-1/2"x3" rectangles.

ASSEMBLY:
1. Lay out rectangles as desired.

2. Stitch all seams right sides together using 1/4" seam allowance unless indicated. Stitch rectangles in each row together along short edges.

3. Mark center side edge of each large rectangle. Pin rows together matching mark to seam line of adjacent row. Use a seam allowance slightly wider than 1/4". Finished piece if 16-1/2"x12-1/2".

4. Stitch short flange strips to the side edges of the pillow center starting and stopping stitching 1/4" from ends. Then stitch the long flange strips to the top and bottom edges of the pillow center in the same manner. Stitch the diagonal edges of adjacent flange pieces together. Fold center with flanges on a diagonal, right sides together. Line up ends of flange and stitch.

5. Place quilt batting on top of backing fabric. Center pillow top on batting right side up and pin layers.

6. Quilt along seamline between the flange and pillow center. Quilt as desired. Baste 3/8" from outer edges of the flange.

7. Turn under 1" then 1" again on 16" side edge of pillow back pieces. Stitch hems along inner edge.

8. Overlap hemmed edges of larger back over hemmed edge of smaller piece so back is 20" wide. Baste pieces together 1/2" from top and edges. Stitch 2" along edge of hem to top and bottom of edge.

9. With right sides together, stitch front and back 1/2" from outer edge. Clip corners, turn right side out.

10. Stitch along seamline between pillow center and flange. Insert pillow insert.
