ASSEMBLY:

  1. Trace Figure 1 on template plastic and cut out.
  2. Use the template to trim both ends of 31 Unit 2 rectangles.
  3. Use the template to trim one end of 18 Unit 2 rectangles.
  4. Make star points. Stack 2 Unit 11 rectangles, right sides facing in. Cut along the diagonal to make 2 pairs of long triangles. Cut 160 triangles from 80 Unit 11 rectangles.
  5. Sew star points to both ends of the 31 trimmed Step 2 rectangles. Sew star points to one end of the 18 trimmed Step 3 rectangles.
  6. Sew a Unit 5 strip to a Unit 14 strip, lengthwise. Repeat for a total of 3 strip sets. Press the seams toward the darker fabric. Cut the strip sets to 60 units 17/8" wide.
  7. Cut fifteen 17/8" squares from remaining Unit 14 strip.
  8. Sew 60 Unit 6 half square triangles to 60 Unit 8 half square triangles to make 60 half square triangle squares.
  9. Make 15 Monkey Wrench Blocks. Use 4 Step 8 half square triangle squares, 1 Step 7 square and 4 Step 6 Units, aligning the pieces as they appear in the quilt picture. Sew the pieces together in 3 rows.
  10. Make 15 Square in a Square blocks. For each block use 4 Unit 4 half square triangles and 1 Unit 9 square. Sew triangles to opposite edges of the square and press the seam allowances away from the center. Sew triangles to the 2 remaining edges and press the seam allowances away from the center.
  11. Make 15 Square in a Square blocks with the Monkey Wrench blocks. Use 4 Unit 12 half square triangles and 1 Step 9 square.
  12. Lay out the Step 10 and Step 11 Blocks.
  13. Place the 18 Step 5 rectangles between each of the 18 outer squares of the quilt. Place the 31 Step 5 rectangles between all of the rest of the blocks in the quilt.
  14. Place a square in the space where 4 rectangles meet, alternating a Unit 7 square or a Unit 3 square.
  15. Sew the quilt together in rows. After pressing the quilt, measure the quilt top. Combine Unit 10 border strips and cut to fit the quilt top, applying borders to the sides then the top and bottom, mitering the corners.
  16. Repeat Step 14 for the Unit 1 outer border strips. Cut the Toile backing fabric (6 yds) length in half crosswise. Sew the 2 pieces together along a pair of long edges. If additional width is needed, add a strip pieced from the unused Toile border fabric.
