SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

AUSTRALIAN SUPERFINE MERINO BY CLECKHEATON 8 PLY 65g/2.3oz balls

Use only the yarn specified. Other yarns are likely to produce different results.
Quantities are approximate as they can vary between crochet workers.
Check all yarn is from the same dye lot.

·         G-6 (4mm) crochet hook or size needed to give correct gauge.

·         Pom pom maker or piece of cardboard (optional).

·         Yarn needle for sewing in ends.

GAUGE

17dc and 10.5 rows to 4” (10cm) over dc fabric.

To check your gauge, make 27ch.

Work 15 rows dc fabric. Fasten off.

Check your gauge carefully.

If less sts to 4” (10cm) use a smaller hook, if more sts use a larger hook.

DIRECTIONS: (beg at crown)

Make 2ch.

1st round – Skip first ch, (2sc, 2hdc, 16dc) in last ch, do not join with a sl st as beanie is worked in a spiral … 20 sts.

2nd round – (2dc in next st, 1dc in next st) 10 times … 30dc.

3rd round – (2dc in next dc, 1dc in each of next 2dc) 10 times … 40dc.

4th round – (2dc in next dc, 1dc in each of next 3dc) 10 times … 50dc.

5th round – (2dc in next dc, 1dc in each of next 4dc) 10 times … 60dc.

6th round – (2dc in next dc, 1dc in each of next 5dc) 10 times … 70dc.

7th round – (2dc in next dc, 1dc in each of next 6dc) 10 times … 80dc.

8th round – (2dc in next dc, 1dc in each of next 17dc) 0 (4) times, 1dc in each of next 75 (3) dc, 1hdc in each of next 2dc, 1sc in each of next 2dc, sl st in next dc … 80 (84) sts.

Rem of Beanie is worked in joined rounds.

9th round – 3ch, 1dc in each st to end, sl st in 3rd ch at beg.

Rep last round until Beanie measures 7 (7 ½)” [18 (19) cm] from beg.

beg band –

1st round (worked left to right) – 1ch, Crab st in front lp only of each dc to end, sl st in back lp of first Crab st.

2nd round (worked right to left) – 3ch, 1dc in rem back lp of each dc (working behind Crab sts) to end, sl st in 3rd ch at beg.

Rep last 2 rounds 5 times. Fasten off.

FINISHING

DO NOT PRESS. If desired, using large pom pom maker or two circles of cardboard 4” (10cm) in diameter with a 1½” (4cm) diameter hole in center, make a loose pom pom and attach securely to crown.
