DIRECTIONS:

To print illustrated instructions for this project, click on the "Download Project PDF" button (above).
  1. Embroider. Using the instructions in the Penguin & Fish embroidery pattern, stitch the animal onto one of the main exterior fabric pieces. Place the design slightly above the center of the fabric.
  2. Sew patchwork. With right sides together, sew the first patchwork piece to the second patchwork piece on the long edge with a 1/4" seam allowance. Repeat until there are 4 pieces sewn together. Iron flat with seams open.
  3. Sew front. With wrong sides together, align the top of the patchwork with the bottom of the exterior fabric. With topstitch thread color, sew across pieces with a 1" seam allowance. Trim the sewn edge with a pinking shears.
  4. Topstitch. Iron flat with the zigzag edge going upwards. With topstitch thread color, sew the zigzag edge to the exterior fabric, 1/4" above the first seam. Repeat steps 2 - 4 for the exterior back of your tote.
  5. Handles. Sew together 3 of the handle strips 1" from the short edge. Braid strips until braid measures 20" or until handle is the length desired. Sew across strips at the end of the braid to hold the strips in place. Trim strips 1" from the braid. Repeat for the second handle, making sure the handles are the same length.
  6. Attach handles and lining. On the right side and top of the exterior piece, pin handle (ends up) 3-1/2" from each side. The stitches on the handle should align with the top of the exterior piece. With right sides together place lining piece onto the exterior piece and handles. Sew across the top with a 1/4" seam allowance.
  7. Lay flat. Flip your fabric open and iron flat (don’t iron the handle). Repeat steps 6 - 7 for second side.
  8. Sew sides together. With right sides together, lay the front and back pieces on top of each other, the exterior front piece facing the exterior back piece and lining facing lining. Pin in place making sure that the seams line up. With a 1/4" seam allowance, sew around the entire piece starting on a side of the lining. Leave a 3" opening.
  9. Turn right side out. Trim off all corners. Turn your tote right side out through the opening in the lining. Stitch the opening shut.
  10. Topstitch. Tuck the lining into the exterior of the tote. With topstitch thread color, sew around entire top of the tote 3/8" from the edge.
