Note: Pattern is written for smallest size with changes for larger sizes in parentheses. When only one number is given, it applies to all sizes. To follow pattern more easily, circle all numbers pertaining to desired size before beginning.
12 sc + 12 rows = 4" with A.
Be sure to check gauge.
When matching the gauge in a pattern, the project will be the size specified in the pattern and the supplies specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes fewer stitches and rows to match the gauge, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
sc2tog (sc 2 sts together) (Insert hook in next st and draw up a loop) twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook – 1 st decreased.
1. Cuff is worked first, back and forth in rows.
2. Body of mitten is worked from stitches picked up along one long edge of cuff.
3. Body of mitten is worked in rows to create an opening for thumb, then joined and worked in the round.
4. Thumb is worked in continuous rnds (spiral).
MITTENS (make 2)
With B, and leaving a long yarn beg tail, ch 8 (10, 12, 13).
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across – 7 (9, 11, 12) sts.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, working in back loops only, sc in each st across.
Rep last row 11 (15, 19, 23) more times.
Body of Mitten
From RS, join A with sl st in one corner of cuff, so that you are ready to work across a long edge.
Note: Beg of Mitten is worked back and forth in rows to make an opening for the thumb.
Row 1: Work 13 (17, 21, 25) sc evenly spaced across long edge of cuff.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, (sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st) 3 (4, 5, 5) times, sc in each st to end of row – 16 (21, 26, 30) sts at the end of this row. Place a marker in the beg and another in the end of this row for Thumb placement.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.
Rep last row 1 (2, 3, 4) more times.
Note: Work now proceeds in joined rnds.
Joining Rnd (RS): Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across; join with sl st in first sc of this rnd.
Next 4 (6, 11, 12) Rnds: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st around; join with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, turn, (sc in next 2 (4, 8, 5) sts, sc2tog) 4 (3, 2, 4) times, sc in each st to end of rnd; join with sl st in first sc – 12 (18, 24, 26) sts at the end of this rnd.
