NOTE: All Scaredy Cat Projects:
Cat Charts are worked in intarsia colorwork. When following a chart, use a separate skein for each color section. Do not carry unused color(s) across WS of work. Twist yarns on WS to prevent holes.

Scaredy Cat Hat

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Lion Brand® Vanna’s Choice® Yarn 1 skein ea: Terracotta (A) , Linen (B), Charcoal Grey (C), Radiant Lime (D)
  • Knitting needles size 7 (4.5 mm) & 9 (5.5 mm)
  • Crochet hook size G-6 (4.25 mm)
  • Stitch markers
  • Large-eyed blunt needle

Sizes: S(M, Large)
Circumference 18" (20, 22)"[45.5 (51, 56) cm])
GAUGE:16 sts + 22 rows = 4" [10 cm] in St st (k on RS, p on WS) with larger needles. Adjust needle size to obtain gauge.

STITCH EXPLANATION
Chain St
Thread needle. Bring from back to front through piece. *Hold short length of yarn on front to form small loop. Insert needle back into where it last came out – do not pull tight. Bring needle back through work & small loop; rep from * until chain is desired length.

PATTERN STITCH
K1, p1 Rib (worked over odd number of sts)
Row 1 (RS): *K1, p1; rep from * to last st, k1.
Row 2: K the knit sts & p the purl sts.
Rep Row 2 for K1, p1 Rib.

NOTES
  1. Hat is worked back & forth in rows in St st (k on RS, p on WS) with a ribbed edge, then seamed.
  2. Wind A into 2 balls before beginning.
  3. Work in St st when following chart. Read RS rows from right to left & WS rows from left to right.

DIRECTIONS:

Written for smallest size; changes for larger sizes in ( ).
With smaller needles & A, cast on 73 (81, 89) sts. Work in K1, p1 rib for 8 rows, end with a WS row as the last row worked.

Begin Cat Chart
Next Row (RS): Change to larger needles. K21 (25, 29) sts with A, work Row 1 of chart across next 31 sts, k21 (25, 29) sts with A.
Continue in St st (k on RS, p on WS); keep center 31 center sts in chart & rem sts in A until all 21 rows of chart are complete.
Continue in St st with A until piece measures 5" [12.5 cm] from beg; end with a RS row.
Next Row: P2tog, p to end of row - 72 (80, 88) sts.

Shape Crown
Dec Row 1 (RS): *K7 (8, 9), k2tog, place marker; rep from * 6 more times, k to last 2 sts, k2tog – 64 (72, 80) sts.
Purl 1 row.
Dec Row 2: *Knit to 2 sts before marker, k2tog; rep from * 6 more times, k to last 2 sts, k2tog – 56 (64, 72) sts.
Rep last 2 rows until 56 sts rem.
Change to B. Continue to rep last 2 rows until 40 sts rem.
Change to A. Continue to rep last 2 rows until 24 sts rem.
Change to B. Continue to rep last 2 rows until 16 sts rem.
With B, purl 1 row.
Last Row: (K2tog) across – 8 sts.
Cut yarn; leave a long yarn tail. Thread tail through rem sts; pull to gather. Knot securely.

FINISHING
Eyes
Make 2. With C, chain 12. Fasten off. Coil chain to form a circle; sew to center of each eye.With B, work 2 chain sts on each eye.With D, work chain st around each eye.

Nose
With crochet hook & A, chain 14. Fasten off. Coil chain to form a circle. Sew to center of cat face. With B, work, 2 lines of chain st on each side of nose for whiskers. Sew sides to make Hat. Weave in ends.


Scaredy Cat Scarf

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Lion Brand® Vanna’s Choice® Yarn,
  • 1 skein ea: Terracotta (A), Linen (B) ,Charcoal Grey (C), Radiant Lime (D)
  • Knitting needles size 9 [5.5 mm]
  • Crochet hook size G-6 [4.25 mm]
  • Large-eyed blunt needle
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure

Size: 4½"x42" [11.5 cm x 106.5 cm] plus tail
GAUGE:16 sts + 30 rows = 4" [10 cm] in
Garter st (k every row). Adjust needle size to obtain gauge.

STITCH EXPLANATIONS:
kfb (knit in front & back) Knit next st without removing it from left needle, then k through back of same st – 1 st increased.
Chain St: Refer to Scaredy Cat Hat

NOTES:
  1. Body of Scarf is worked in stripes in Garter st (k every row). Carry color not in use loosely along side edge.
  2. Wind 2 small balls each of C & D before beginning.
  3. Work in Garter st when following chart. Read RS rows from right to left & WS rows from left to right.

STRIPE SEQUENCE
In Garter st, work 4 rows with B, 4 rows with A. Rep 8 rows for Stripe Sequence.

DIRECTIONS:

With C, cast on 10 sts.
Knit 2 rows.
Inc Row (RS): K1, kfb, knit to last 2 sts, kfb, k1 – 12 sts.
Knit 1 row.
Rep last 2 rows 3 more times – 18 sts when all incs are complete.
Work in Garter st (k every row) until piece measures 31?2" [(9 cm] from beg, end with WS row.

Begin Cat Chart
Next Row (RS): Work Row 1 of chart.
Continuing in Garter st, follow chart until all 16 rows of chart are complete.
Continue in Garter st, work 4 rows with A & 4 rows with B as established until piece measures 41" [104 cm] from beg. End with 1 complete 4 row A or B stripe.
Dec Row (RS): With next stripe color, k2tog, knit to last 2 sts, k2tog – 16 sts rem.
Knit 1 row.
Rep last 2 rows 3 more times, changing color for stripe pattern as established – 10 sts rem when all dec’s are complete.
Change to C. Work in Garter st 9" [23 cm] for tail. End with a WS row. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through rem sts & pull to gather. Knot securely.

FINISHING:
Eyes:Make 2.
With crochet hook & C, chain 10 sts. Fasten off. Coil chain t form a circle. Sew to the center of each eye. With B, work 2 chain sts on each eye. With D, work chain st around each eye.

Nose:With crochet hook & A, chain 12. Fasten off.
Coil chain into a circle & sew to center of cat face 1" [2.5 cm] above bottom edge.
With B, work 2 lines of chain st on each side of nose for whiskers.
Weave in ends.

  • Crochet hook size G-6 [4.25 mm]
  • Stitch markers
  • Large-eyed blunt needle
  • Circular knitting needle size 9 (5.5 mm),
  • 32" (81 cm) long
  • Tape measure
  • Scissors

Size: 32"x35"[81.5 cm x 89 cm]
GAUGE: 16 sts + 22 rows = 4" [10 cm]
in St st (k on RS rows, p on WS rows). Adjust needle size to obtain gauge.

STITCH EXPLANATIONS
Chain Stitch: Refer to Scaredy Cat Hat

NOTES:
  1. Work back & forth on circular needle as if working on straight needles.
  2. Cat Chart is worked over stripes, so background color is blank on chart. Work background color as instructed.
  3. Work in St st from Cat Chart. Read RS rows from right to left & WS rows from left to right.
  4. Borders are worked as one piece with the throw, using intarsia method with separate skeins for side borders.

DIRECTIONS:

With circular needle & A, cast on 129 sts.
Work in Garter St (k every row) for 8 rows.
Row 1 (RS): K5 with A for Garter st border, change to B. Knit to last 5 sts for St st (k on RS, p on WS), k5 with A for Garter st border.
Row 2: K5 with A, purl to last 5 sts with B, k5 with A.
Rows 3-14: Continue to k first & last 5 sts with A for Garter st border. Work rem sts in St st, as established with B.
Rows 15-18: With A only, continue to k first & last 5 sts for Garter st border. Work rem sts in St st.

Begin Cat Chart
Row 19 (RS): With A, k5; with A, k52, place marker (pm), work Row 1 of chart across next 15 sts, pm, k52, k5.
Rows 20-28: Slipping markers as you reach them, with A, k5, with A, work in St st to next marker, work next row of chart to next marker, with A, work in St st to last 5 sts, with A, k5.
Rows 29-39: With A, k5, with B, work in St st to marker, work next row of chart to next marker, work in St st with B to last 5 sts, with A, k5.
Rows 40-42: Remove markers while working Row 40, with A, k5, with B work in St st to last 5 sts, with A, k5.
Rows 43-56: With A, k5, work in St st to last 5 sts, k5.
Rows 57-60: With A, k5, with B, work in St st to last 5 sts, with A, k5.

Begin Cat Chart

Rows 62-70: Slipping markers as you reach them, with A, k5, *with B, work in St st to next marker, work next row of chart across to next marker; rep from * once; with B, work in St st to last 5 sts, with A, k5.
Rows 71-81: With A, k5, *with A, work in St st to next marker, work next row of chart to next marker; rep from * once; with A, work in St st to last 5 sts, with A, k5.
Rows 82-84: Remove markers while working Row 81, with A, k5, with A work in St st to last 5 sts, with A, k5.
Rows 85-168: Rep Rows 1-84.
Rows 169-182: Rep Rows 1-14.
With A only, work 8 rows in Garter st.
Bind off.

FINISHING
Eyes
Make 12. With crochet hook & C, chain 8. Fasten off. Coil chain to form a circle. Sew to center of each eye. With B, work 2 chain sts on each eye. With D, work chain st around each eye.

Nose
Make 6. With crochet hook & A, chain 10. Fasten off. Coil chain to form circle; sew to center of cat face. With B, work 2 lines of chain st on each side of nose for whiskers. Weave in ends.
