Description

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Red Heart® Scrubby™: 1 ball each Lime A, Orange B, Coconut C, Black D, and Ocean E
  • Susan Bates® Knitting Needles: 4mm [US 6]
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch holder
  • Tape measure
  • Scissors

    • GAUGE: Gauge is not critical for this project.

    • Pattern Stitch
    • 1 x 1 Rib (multiple of 2 sts)
    • Row 1 (right side): *K1, p1; repeat from * to end of row.
    • Repeat this row for 1x1 Rib.

    • Special Stitch
    • kfb (Knit into front and back) = Knit next stitch but do not remove from needle, knit into back loop of same stitch and remove from needle.
    • k3tog = Knit next 3 stitches together.

    • Notes:
    • Puppet is made of glove, facial features and tail. All pieces are sewn to glove.
    • Puppet measures 14" (35.5 cm) including tail.

    • DIRECTIONS:

    • Glove
    • Beginning at wrist, with A, cast on 26 sts.
    • Work in 1 x 1 Rib until piece measures 5" (12.5 cm) from beginning.
    • Next Row: *[K1, p1] 6 times, kfb*, slide these 14 sts to stitch holder; repeat from * to * once—14 sts remain on needle.
    • Head Side 1
    • Work over 14 sts that remain on needle only.
    • Work in 1 x 1 Rib until piece measures 8" (20.5 cm) from beginning.
    • Next row: [K2tog] 7 times—7 sts. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail on needle. Slide sts onto yarn needle, pull tail tightly to gather, and secure.
    • Head Side 2
    • Return 14 sts on holder to needle. Work same as head side 1.

    • Inner Mouth (make 2)
    • With B, cast on 14 sts.
    • Work in 1 x 1 Rib until piece measures 3" (7.5 cm) from beginning.
    • Next row: [K2tog] 7 times—7 sts.
    • Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail on needle. Slide sts onto yarn needle, pull tail tightly to gather, and secure.
    • Sew cast on edges of inner mouths together. Sew inner mouths to head sides. Sew sides of glove together. Turn piece right side out, so that seams are on the inside of glove.

    • Teeth (make 2)
    • With A, cast on 36 sts.
    • Knit 2 rows.
    • Change to C.
    • Knit 2 rows.
    • Bind off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
    • Position A-colored row of one set of teeth along edge of head slightly above mouth. Sew to head. Position A-colored row of other set of teeth along edge of head slightly below mouth. Sew to head, then sew short edges of teeth together. Pull tails to wrong side of piece.

    • Eye (make 2)
    • With C, cast on 6 sts.
    • Row 1: [Kfb] 6 times—12 sts.
    • Row 2: Knit.
    • Bind off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Gather sts through cast on edge and sew side edges together.

    • Pupil (make 2)
    • With D, cast on 1 st.
    • Row 1: (K1, p1, k1) in st—3 sts.
    • Row 2: K3tog—1 st.
    • Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Pull tail through last st. Sew to center of eye, then sew eye in place.

    • Nostril (make 2)
    • With A, cast on 6 sts.
    • Knit 3 rows.
    • Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail on needle. Slide sts onto yarn needle, pull tail tightly to gather, and secure. Weave tail around edges and pull tightly to form a cupped shape. Sew in place.

    • Spine
    • With E, cast on 40 sts.
    • Knit 2 rows.
    • Bind off. Center spine on back of glove, placing one end below eyes; pin in place, allowing lower section of spine to hang freely. Sew through top half of glove only.

    • Tail Fin (make 2)
    • With E, cast on 3 sts.
    • Row 1: Knit.
    • Row 2: Kfb in each st across—6 sts.
    • Rows 3 and 4: Repeat Rows 1 and 2—12 sts.
    • Knit every row until piece measures 2" (5 cm) from beginning.
    • Next row: [K2tog] 6 times—6 sts.
    • Bind off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Weave yarn through last row, gather sts, and sew fin to end of spine.

    • Side Fin (make 2)
    • With A, cast on 12 sts.
    • Row 1: Knit.
    • Row 2: K2tog, k to end of row—11 sts.
    • Rows 3–20: Repeat last 2 rows 9 times—2 sts.
    • Row 21: K2tog—1 st.
    • Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Pull tail through last st. Sew in place on side of glove.

    • FINISHING:
    • Weave in ends.

    • ABBREVIATIONS:
    • A, B, C = Color A, Color B, Color C, etc.
    • k = knit
    • k2tog = knit next 2 sts together
    • [ ] = work directions in brackets the number of times specified
    • * or ** = repeat whatever follows the * or ** as indicated
