    • SIZE:
    • About 44" x 54" (112 x 137 cm)

    • GAUGE:
    • 13 1/2 hdc + 8 rows = about 4" (10 cm).
    • BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.

    • NOTES:
    • Afghan is made in 2 sections. The sections are constructed in an interesting way – sometimes working sts across existing pieces and sometimes sewing pieces together.
    • Take a careful look at the diagram before beginning so that you understand the construction process. Continue to refer to the diagram as you work.
    • Section I of the Afghan is made from 17 rectangles; Section II is made of 16 rectangles.
    • The assembled sections are sewn together to make the Afghan.
    • To change yarn color, work last st of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete st. Proceed with new color. Fasten off old color.

    DIRECTIONS:

      • SECTION I
      • Rectangle 1
      • With A, ch 28.
      • Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across – there will be 27 sc at the end of this row.
      • Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), turn, sk first sc, hdc in back loop only of each sc across to last sc, hdc in both loops of last sc.
      • Rows 3-12: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), turn, sk first hdc, hdc in back loop only of each hdc across to beg ch, hdc in both loops at top of beg ch.
      • At the end of Row 12, ch 14, then fasten off. The ch-14 will be used as a foundation chain for Rectangle 2.

      • Rectangle 2
      • Row 1 (RS): From RS, join C with a sl st in beg ch of Row 1 of Rectangle 1.
      • Ch 1, working in ends of rows, work 20 sc spaced evenly across side edge of Rectangle 1, then sc in each of the 14 ch – you will have 34 sc.
      • Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), turn, sk first sc, hdc in back loop only of each sc across to last sc, hdc in both loops of last sc.
      • Rows 3-20: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), turn, sk first hdc, hdc in back loop only of each hdc across to beg ch, hdc in both loops at top of beg ch.
      • Fasten off.

      • Rectangle 3
      • Row 1 (RS): From RS, join D with a sl st in beg ch of last row of Rectangle 2.
      • Ch 1, working in ends of rows, work 34 sc evenly spaced across edge of Rectangle 2 – you will have 34 sc.
      • Rows 2-16: Work same as Rows 2-16 of Rectangle 2.
      • Fasten off.

      • Rectangle 4
      • Row 1 (RS): From RS, join B with a sl st in beg ch of Row 12 of Rectangle 3.
      • Ch 1, working in ends of rows, work 20 sc spaced evenly across edge of Rectangle 3, then work 14 sc spaced evenly along rem edge of Rectangle 2 – 34 sc.
      • Rows 2-16: Work same as Rows 2-16 of Rectangle 2.
      • Fasten off.
      • With B, sew adjoining edges of Rectangles 1 and 4 together.

      • Rectangle 5
      • Row 1 (RS): From RS, join A with a sl st in beg ch of Row 1 of Rectangle 4.
      • Ch 1, working in ends of rows, work 27 sc spaced evenly across edge of Rectangle 4 – 27 sc.
      • Rows 2-12: Work same as Rows 2-12 of Rectangle 2.
      • At the end of Row 12, ch 20, then fasten off.
      • With A, sew edge of Rows 1-4 of Rectangle 5 to adjoining edge of Rectangle 3.

      • Rectangle 6
      • Row 1 (RS): From RS, join C with a sl st in beg ch of Row 5 of Rectangle 5.
      • Ch 1, working in ends of rows, work 14 sc spaced evenly across rem edge of Rectangle 5, then sc in each of the 20 ch – 34 sc.
      • Rows 2-20: Work same as Rows 2-20 of Rectangle 2.
      • Fasten off.
      • With C, sew adjoining edges of Rectangles 3 and 6 together.

      • Rectangle 7
      • Row 1 (RS): From RS, join D with a sl st in beg ch of last row of Rectangle 6.
      • Ch 1, working in ends of rows, work 34 sc evenly spaced across edge of Rectangle 6 – 34 sc.
      • Rows 2-16: Work same as Rows 2-16 of Rectangle 2.
      • Fasten off.

      • Rectangle 8
      • Row 1 (RS): From RS, join B with a sl st in beg ch of Row 8 of Rectangle 7.
      • Ch 1, working in ends of rows, work 14 sc evenly spaced across edge of Rectangle 7, then work 20 sc evenly spaced across rem edge of Rectangle 6 –34 sc.
      • Rows 2-16: Work same as Rows 2-16 of Rectangle 2.
      • Fasten off.
      • With B, sew adjoining edges of Rectangles 5 and 8 together.

      • Rectangle 9
      • Row 1 (RS): From RS, join A with a sl st in beg ch of Row 1 of Rectangle 8.
      • Ch 1, working in ends of rows, work 27 sc spaced evenly across edge of Rectangle 8 – 27 sc.
      • Rows 2-12: Work same as Rows 2-12 of Rectangle 2.
      • At the end of Row 12, ch 27, then fasten off.
      • With A, sew edge of Rows 1-8 of Rectangle 9 and adjoining edge of Rectangle 7 together.

      • Rectangle 10
      • Row 1 (RS): From RS, join C with a sl st in beg ch of Row 9 of Rectangle 9.
      • Ch 1, working in ends of rows, work 7 sc spaced evenly across edge of Rectangle 9, then sc in each of the 27 ch – 34 sc.
      • Rows 2-20: Work same as Rows 2-20 of Rectangle 2.
      • Fasten off.
      • With C, sew adjoining edges of Rectangles 7 and 10 together.

      • Rectangle 11
      • Row 1 (RS): From RS, join D with a sl st in beg ch of last row of Rectangle 10.
      • Ch 1, working in ends of rows, work 34 sc evenly spaced across edge of Rectangle 10 – 34 sc.
      • Rows 2-16: Work same as Rows 2-16 of Rectangle 2.
      • Fasten off.

      • Rectangle 12
      • Row 1 (RS): From RS, join B with a sl st in beg ch of Row 4 of Rectangle 11.
      • Ch 1, working in ends of rows, work 7 sc spaced evenly across edge of Rectangle 11, then work 27 sc spaced evenly across rem edge of Rectangle 10 –34 sc.
      • Rows 2-16: Work same as Rows 2-16 of Rectangle 2.
      • Fasten off.
      • With B, sew adjoining edges of Rectangles 9 and 12 together.

      • Rectangle 13
      • Row 1 (RS): From RS, join A with a sl st in beg ch of Row 1 of Rectangle 12.
      • Ch 1, working in ends of rows, work 27 sc evenly spaced across edge of Rectangle 12 – 27 sc.
      • Rows 2-12: Work same as Rows 2-12 of Rectangle 2.
      • Fasten off.
      • With A, sew adjoining edges of Rectangles 11 and 13 together.

      • Rectangle 14
      • Row 1 (RS): From RS, join A with a sl st in 14th st from end of last row of Rectangle 2.
      • Ch 1, sc in same st and in last 13 sts of last row of Rectangle 2; working in ends of rows, work 20 sc spaced evenly across edge of Rows 1-12 of Rectangle 3 – 34 sc.
      • Rows 2-16: Work same as Rows 2-16 of Rectangle 2.
      • Fasten off.

      • Rectangle 15
      • Row 1 (RS): From RS, join B with a sl st in beg ch of Row 1 of Rectangle 14, working in ends of rows, work 27 sc evenly spaced across edge of Rectangle 14 – 27 sc.
      • Rows 2-6: Work same as Rows 2-6 of Rectangle 2.
      • Change to A.
      • Rows 7-12: With A, ch 2 (counts as hdc), turn, sk first hdc, hdc in back loop only of each hdc across to beg ch, hdc in both loops at top of beg ch.
      • Fasten off.
      • With C, sew adjoining edges of Rectangles 2 and 15 together.

      • Rectangle 16
      • Row 1 (RS): From RS, join B with a sl st in beg ch of last row of Rectangle 14.
      • Ch 1, working in ends of rows, work 27 sc evenly spaced across edge of Rectangle 14 – 27 sc.
      • Rows 2-12: Work same as Rows 2-12 of Rectangle 2.
      • Fasten off.
      • With B, sew adjoining edges of Rectangles 3 and 16 together, then sew rem edge of Rectangle 16 to first 14 sts of last row of Rectangle 6.

      • Rectangle 17
      • Row 1 (RS): From RS, join D with a sl st in 20th st from end of last row of Rectangle 6.
      • Ch 1, sc in same st and in last 19 sc of last row of Rectangle 6; working in ends of rows, work 14 sc evenly spaced across edge of first 8 rows of Rectangle 7 – 34 sc.
      • Rows 2-16: Work same as Rows 2-16 of Rectangle 2.
      • Fasten off.
      • With D, sew adjoining edges of Rectangles 16 and 17 together.

      • SECTION II
      • Make same as Section I, working Rectangles 1-16 only.

      • FINISHING:
      • Following diagram, sew Sections I and II together.

      • Border
      • Rnd 1: From RS, join C with a sl st anywhere along outside edge of Afghan. Ch 1, work sc evenly spaced around outside edge of Afghan, working 3 sc in each corner; join with sl st in first sc.
      • Fasten off.
      • Rnd 2: From RS, join D with a sl st in any st of Rnd 1. Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in each st around, working 3 sc in center sc at each corner; join with sl st in first sc.
      • Fasten off.
      • Weave in ends.
