Reviews
Simplicity SideWinder Portable Bobbin Winder-White is rated 3.45 out of 5 by 60.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from great idea/poor design this is such a great idea, the makers must have assumed that sewers would buy the idea so didn't have to design/engineer a particularly good product. it looks like a barbie doll accessory; you open the lid and the winder falls over; the bobbins (i've tried those from 3 different brands of machines) are tough to get on, tough to get off; it doesn't wind the bobbin fully; it works but not well if you are winding from cones or large, cylindrical spools; it stops only when it thinks the bobbin is filled (but you can stop it by pulling the winding lever back by hand). other than that, it winds bobbins.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great helper I have owned my sidewinder for 2 years. I use is on a reqular basis as do many of the quilters who come to quilt with me weekly. The thread does not fly off the spindle if you pull the spindle up to its full heighth. Otherwise, yes it will. It does not handle large serger spools. It it is not threaded properly thru the tension disc you will get a mess but if it is threaded properly it does a wonderful job and gets a lot more thread on the bobbin than any of my sewing machines. (I have 10). I sometimes teach children to sew and they have no problem using this machine. Be sure to thread the bobbin up thru the hole in the top of the bobbin and hang on to it firmly when you begin. You can stop the machine just by moving the little arm

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor quality and performance When I opened the box and saw how poorly it was made (cheap plastic...looked like a child's toy) I had a feeling I was in for trouble. The first bobbin I tried wound fairly well but it only filled part way. My sewing machine does a way better job than that. When I tried to wind the second bobbin the thread got caught in the tension discs and would not budge although the machine kept running until I unplugged it. I tried different threads and they would not wind but kept getting caught. The idea for this machine is a good one but this machine is not a good one. I would hope Wrights would come out with a new improved model that really works. I am returning my machine to the store today.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful invention!! I have been using my Side Winder for over a year now, and I would be lost without it!! It has saved me so much time and energy. When the bobbin runs out, instead of having to remove and re-thread my sewing machine, I just use the second spool (I always buy at least 2) to thread 2 or 3 more bobbins, depending on the size of my project. I plan to use the second one at my embroidery machine to save steps running back & forth. (This is a great price!!) I use this thing ALL the time, and I really love it!!! It doesn't wind quite as tight as my sewing machine, but I have never had problems with the bobbins on my Janome sewing machine or the Brother embroidery machine.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It works for me! I was actually looking at this because I was thinking it'd be nice to have a 2nd one--I carry mine between two houses because I really prefer it over using the sewing machine.  I haven't really had any problems--I keep a wound bobbin and then when I need that one I let the sidewider wind the next one, and I don't have to hold onto it--I just set it on the floor next to me.  It is lightweight (I don't use batteries, that might be different) and plasticy but I've been using it several years and it's fine.  I don't buy a 2nd one, just because of the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GIFT: 2 Years of Service & Still going strong Recied mine as a holiday present about 2 years ago and really love it. Use it constantly. Usually do up about a dozen bobbins at a time in black and white thread. Do up colored threads as needed. For the cone threads, put them on upside down and insert a finger in the larger top opening so it doesn't come off. If not my finger, use a pencil, which works just as well. I like the fact that this gaget does not over-wind the bobbins which causes problems with my top loading Brother sewing machine if bobbins overloaded/overwound.

Rated 0 out of 5 by from Returned to Store I quilt a lot and thought it would be nice to have a winder to keep bobbins refilled. I should have read the reviews on here before purchasing at Joann's store (with 40% coupon). At first it didn't work; I put it aside to look at later, and when I did, it worked but wound the bobbin so tightly that my sewing machine kept breaking the thread...that's not good when you are machine quilting. I returned it to the store and got my money back and was told there that a lot of them are returned as defective. That kept me from exchanging it for another one. Good idea, but bad engineering.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Real Time Saver! I love my Sidewinder. I am a quilter and I appreciate how handy this time is to quickly wind serveral bobbins at a time in different colors and have them handy for the next steps in a quilt project. I use it all the time and recommend it to other sewers and quilters. One improvement would be to be able to "lock" the spool of thread onto the spindle so you don't have to sit with your finger on it so it doesn't fly off. I think the price is a little high for what it is so that could be addressed. All in all I am happy with my Sidewinder.
