Single Seam Sundress

Additional Information

Description

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Pre-shirred, elasticized cotton fabric
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • Straight pins
  • Thread to match fabric
  • Sewing machine
  • 1 yard of 1/2" to 5/8" ribbon
  • Hand sewing needle

DIRECTIONS:

1. Measure the bust or chest all around and subtract 1" from this body measurement. This is the amount of yardage that is needed. When purchasing fabric, be sure to measure the shirred side of the fabric to purchase the correct yardage.
2. With the right sides of fabric together, match the long cut edges of the fabric and pin together, forming a tube. Stitch together in a 1/2" seam.
3. Hem the sundress to the length desired.
4. Cut the ribbon in half, so there are two lengths, each measuring 18" long.
5. Try on sundress; place ribbon in position to create shoulder straps, pinning each ribbon end to the wrong side of the sundress bodice.
6. Hand stitch straps securely in place; trim off excess ribbon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Soooo easy I found it by accident. Asked one of the girls about it. Easy peasy. I have made 8 for my grand daughter. Joanns has such cute character material and they gave me a great suggestion for the straps. Use the colored elastic. May have to make some for my daughter's too.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice beginner project Fine instructions for a simple *BEGINNER* project. The only beef I have about the project is where it's rated "intermediate" skill level. No way. It has *one* seam and a hem, with ribbon for straps. That's beginner level. If it were intermediate there would be a variety of techniques used (ie. darts, tucks, pleats, pressing, understitching, etc.). With that said, glancing at this should allow me to make several little sundresses in a short time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So Easy! It took me longer to dig out my sewing machine and set it up than actually sewing this dress. So easy to make this sundress for my daughter and she loves it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for first sewing project My 7 yr old has an interest in sewing. This was a great first project for us. Super easy except lining up the top part during our hand stitching was a little hard for us as beginners.
