SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Tulip® Custom Color Lab 100% cotton yarn skeins (2): Lace Weight
  • Tulip® Custom Color Lab Cotton Yarn Dye Kit® Open Stock: Cool Pool, Azalea (2 bottles)
  • Tulip® Custom Color Lab Cotton Yarn Dye Kit®: Cool (By the Sea, Cool Pool)
  • Size US 5 (3.75 MM) dpns or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Tapestry needle
  • Movable stitch marker
  • Blocking supplies
  • Gauge: 16 sts & 20 rows = 4" in blocked slip stitch pattern
  • Plastic or glass bowl
  • Plastic table cover

DIRECTIONS:

    Yarn Dyeing Instructions:
  1. Untwist yarn skeins and tie in three places with small strings of yarn to prevent tangling.
  2. Dampen yarn with water.
  3. Wearing gloves from kit, add water to dye bottles and shake to mix. Mix 2 bottles of Azalea, 2 bottles of Cool Pool and 1 bottle of By the Sea. Dilute one bottle of Azalea.
  4. Variegated Yarn: Lay out on covered work surface in an oval shape. Apply sections of Azalea, diluted Azalea and By The Sea dye colors onto 1 skein, overlapping colors.
  5. Solid colored yarn: Submerge 1 skein of yarn in bowl with dye or apply Cool Pool dye to entire skein and work into yarn.
  6. Cover in plastic wrap to keep damp and let set 4 to 6 hours or longer. Once set, rinse thoroughly under running water until water runs clear and hang to dry.
    GAUGE:
  • 16 sts and 20 rows = 4" in blocked slip stitch pattern
  • BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE

  • NOTES:
  • kyok: Knit 1, yarn over, knit 1 in the same st – 2 sts increased
  • k1tbl – Knit 1 through back loop
  • Sl – slip purlwise with yarn to WS of work
  • ssk – slip the next 2 sts, one at a time as if to knit to the right-hand needle, insert the left-hand needle into the front of the sts and knit them both together

  • PATTERN STITCH:
  • Variegated Shawl Body
  • Using Main Color (MC) CO 5 sts and work set-up rows.
    • Set-Up Row 1: Sl1, kyok 3x, k1tbl – 11 sts.
    • Set-Up Row 2: Sl1, p9, k1tbl.
    • Place a movable marker on the center st and work repeating Body Rows – all in MC. The marker can be moved up as the shawl grows to easily identify the center st.

    • Row 1 (RS): Sl1, kyok, knit to center st, kyok, knit to last 2 sts, kyok, k1tbl.
    • Row 2 (WS): Sl1, knit to last st, k1tbl.
    • Row 3: Sl1, kyok, knit to center st, kyok, knit to last 2 sts, kyok, k1tbl.
    • Row 4: Sl1, purl to last st, k1tbl.

    • Repeat these 4 rows until there are 209 sts on the needles.
    • Slip Stitch Shawl Section
    • Using Contrast Color (CC) work set-up rows for this section.

    • Set-Up Row 1 (RS): Sl1, kyok, knit to center st, kyok, knit to last 2 sts, kyok, k1tbl.

    • Set-Up Row 2 (WS): Sl1, knit to last st, k1tbl.
    • Work Slip Stitch Rows using MC and CC as indicated.

    • Row 1 (MC): Sl1, kyok, *sl2, k4; rep from * to 3 sts before center st, sl2, k1, kyok, k1, sl2, *k4, sl2; rep from * to last 2 sts, kyok, k1tbl.

    • Picot Bind-Off
    • Work the picot bind-off as follows: BO2, *CO 2 sts to left-hand needle, BO6; rep from * to 1 st before center st, (CO 2 sts to left-hand needle, BO4) 2x, *CO 2 sts to left-hand needle, BO6; rep from * to last 3 sts, CO 2 sts to left-hand needle, BO5.
    • Weave in all ends. Wet block using pins or wires to bring out the picot points and open up the eyelet lace.
